[The Shorekeeper Cosplay] Bound by One's Body, Guarding the Other Shore - Image 1

The early-stage concept for this shoot mainly focused on creating momentum for the scene's atmosphere. During the location selection phase, we leaned toward using this pure white gothic pointed arch structure because the architectural lines are very clean and upright, providing a clean background foundation for the cool colors and glowing light effects to be overlaid later. The main color scheme of the costume was designed as a patchwork of light blue and white, and the outer skirt hem adopted an irregular cut, creating a light sense of fragmentation. The long blue streamlined streamer extending from the back serves as a crucial dynamic visual clue in this set of shooting actions. A massive amount of time was spent on the wig part to adjust the direction of the hair strands, especially the shattered hair of the bangs and ends, which needed to look both natural and sculptural, working with the light-colored headpiece on top to balance the overall top-to-bottom proportions.

The venue arrangement on the day of the shoot was highly satisfying, with high-density blue floral designs piled up between the light-colored stone steps on the ground and the Roman pillars on both sides. The color saturation of these bouquets was extremely unified, avoiding any cluttered feel. For my makeup, I chose a base makeup that leans toward being translucent and hydrated, paired with a light pink or nude lipstick, aiming to highlight the expression of the eyes and the contours of the facial features without letting the makeup colors conflict with the main color palette of the image. Because a styling of high-heeled sandals paired with a short skirt was adopted, adjusting the lower body posture during the shoot became the most energy-draining part. Finding a stable foothold between the flowers and stone pillars required considering the elongation effect presented by the leg lines while also controlling the center of gravity of the body, ensuring that the long streamer behind wouldn't stack up too much on the ground due to body tilting.

The lighting setup on-site followed a path of large-area soft light combined with localized hard light illumination. The photographer deliberately lowered the color temperature value of the lighting fixtures, enveloping the entire space in an icy blue filter-like feel. To restore this translucent quality, we tried our best to prevent the background windows from letting in the natural warm light of the real scene, using artificial cold light sources throughout to unify the tone of the frame. The difficulty of post-processing lay in those polygonal light flares and spherical glowing particles scattered across the frame. These embellishing elements could neither steal the visual focus from the main subject character nor fail to present that texture of slowly floating in the air. When dispersing these light dots, we constantly kept an eye on their spatial relationship with the character's face to avoid defects like blocking the face.

The shooting process was indeed a major test of physical stamina. Because the floral arrangement on the ground was very full, the space beneath my feet was extremely limited; accomplishing a series of actions like raising arms, turning around, and letting the skirt hem fall naturally on pointed stiletto high heels relied on the support of the ankles and core muscles. Every time the director called cut, it was necessary to immediately adjust the skirt wrinkles that were friction-deformed due to the actions, and check if the layers of the wig were blown crooked by the wind. When expressing the core of the character, I did not add too many outward expressions but instead tried to use a restrained gaze and a steady stance to convey this sense of serene guarding belonging to this specific character. Choosing to semi-raise one hand in action happened to echo the blue long strip dropping vertically behind, giving the static image a dynamic imagination of airflow passing through.

The overall light, shadow, and color tone of the final pictures lean cold, where the azure blue of the flowers and the white of the architecture form a pristine contrast, while localized warm-white highlights illuminate the character's face. The finally appended drifting light effects and pale blue atmospheric light make the frame look even deeper. Throughout the entire creation cycle, from the final makeup look to the actual shoot and then to the fine retouching adjustments, every step was a process of alignment. The final state presented by this set of works has basically met our requirements for character temperament restoration in anime-style photography.
