[Journalist Alice Cosplay] Identity V: Interweaving Fairy Tale and Reality at The British Library

On May 8th, I completed the Anime-style outdoor photoshoot for Journalist Alice cosplay at The British Library, with Longxiang as the photographer. Delivered as unedited raw shots, the overall mood and atmosphere were captured quite well during the shoot. Compared to shooting plans relying on post-production editing, unedited raw photos place much higher demands on preliminary lighting, makeup cleanliness, and costume texture details. Fortunately, the location choice for this photo set was great, and with the costume's well-defined silhouette, the colors in the raw shots were already very rich.

For character styling, I chose Journalist Alice's classic blue-and-white dress. The fabric choice leans toward light and airy yet with a subtle crispness, allowing the ruffle collar and cuff lace to maintain their shape in both static and dynamic poses. For makeup, focus was placed on eye coloring, using warm orange eyeshadow tones to balance the cool blue shades, paired with flaxen-blonde wavy hair to recreate that young girl in a fairy tale bearing a determined expression. Additionally, I specifically preserved the layered depth of the skirt in the details so that the white lining and lace edges underneath would be revealed when twirling or lifting the skirt.

Some props were prepared for this shoot to enrich visual language. The most interesting was the anti-gravity levitating chair scene, which utilized optical forced perspective and specific camera angles to create an illusion of weightlessness. Maintaining an elegant falling posture in this setting was actually quite challenging, especially since skirts tend to lose shape mid-air. After discussing specific levitation angles with Longxiang, we tried several times before snapping the moment where the skirt hem spread naturally.

Beyond the levitation scenes, we also shot scenes inside The British Library featuring playing cards and flowers. The holding playing card prop formed a great response with the Queen of Spades element in the background. In the set where I held a red rose, lighting was mainly natural light paired with subtle warm ambient light, making skin texture look soft without excessive sharpening, fitting the requirements of unedited raw shots perfectly. The giant playing card backdrop wall was actually a carved wooden door; rivets and lacquer finish added vintage texture to the frame. Standing there perfectly allowed taking advantage of spatial extension to capture both character body lines and skirt curve arcs.

Before shooting, I kept reflecting on that quote mentioned in the post: \"Truth needs no ornate words, only an uncompromising heart.\" This line actually fits the core temperament of the character remarkably well. Seemingly placed in a fantastical scene with fairy tale tones, she is actually constantly searching for and exploring facts. Thus, in overall performance, I avoided acting overly naive or whimsical, preserving a sense of firm resolution and explorative depth in visual details. For instance, in standing poses lifting the skirt, tucking the chin slightly with a level gaze paired with holding playing cards expressed a state of observation and deduction.

Photographer Longxiang also gave great creative latitude in composition. Utilizing the rustic wooden furniture, wallpaper, and carpets of The British Library, fairy-tale and magical elements were seamlessly blended into a relatively realistic environment. For this Cosplay photoshoot, we minimized shallow depth-of-field, avoiding heavy blurring so that background red-and-black stripes and parquet flooring remained clear, creating strong immersion for viewers. No overly complex expressions were needed; clean imagery and natural emotional flow conveyed the narrative depth behind this costume far better.

Overall, this photo set follows a vintage fairy tale style, emphasizing realistic textures and atmospheric feeling. From preparing the costume to final shoot execution, although the timeline was tight, the final output basically achieved the expected results.
