The core of Kasugano Sora's character look lies in the contrast between the silver-white long hair and the black-and-white dress, along with that iconic dark-colored rabbit plush toy. This shoot chose a location under a white-flowered tree in full bloom, where the white blossoms and green leaves formed a naturally pure backdrop. The first close-up image was actually the main focus of the shoot; to capture that settled sense of quietness, I made many adjustments to my gaze and demeanor, striving to present the character's inherently cool and detached temperament.
Regarding the costume details, I selected a well-layered, pure white dress. The neckline features an exquisite small mock neck with ruffles, and the cuffs are also adorned with lace trim, presenting an overall retro, old-school girlhood feel. The wide black necktie paired with a square rhinestone decorative buckle serves as the visual focus of the entire upper body, acting to counterbalance the vast areas of white on the dress. As for headwear, I used long, straight silver-white hair to replicate the character, embellished on both sides with thin black ribbon bows, simple yet fitting the character design.
For props, the dark, long-eared rabbit plush doll utilizes a velvet material, and the cross-stitched button eyes and sewn mouth give this rabbit a look that is both innocent and carries a hint of a dark fairytale. During the shoot, I would adjust my posture holding the rabbit from time to time, sometimes blocking it in front of my chest and sometimes holding it by its arm with one hand, using this to increase the vividness of the frame.
Next is the light and shadow treatment of the entire piece. Because it was under outdoor natural light, the sunshine was blocked by flowers and leaves to form dappled scattered light, making the lighting on the model's face exceptionally soft. However, to avoid the image looking too flat, we intentionally reinforced the contrast of the background's shadowed areas during post-color grading, making the bright parts of the white flowers and the highlights of the character's white dress stand out more, creating a fresh, hard-toned soft-light effect.
In terms of shooting techniques, we used a long-focus, large-aperture lens. In the dynamic spinning of Photo 2, I utilized the gravity of the skirt hem itself and the centrifugal force from turning around to let the skirt naturally flutter up. To capture that exact split second, we tried many times before mastering the snapshot rhythm. The skirt-lifting movement in Photo 4 is also an excellent method to build atmosphere; lightly lifting the skirt hem while slightly turning the body sideways displays the lower body details of the garment while showcasing the aesthetic beauty of composition from different angles.
This shooting process was very smooth, and the communication with the photographer was highly efficient; we were both pursuing an effect that doesn't rigidly conform to standard photoshoots yet beautifully restores the character's soul. After every shoot, I would face the mirror or check the photo playback carefully to see if the hair was messy or if the necktie was crooked, striving for perfect details. The final visual effect presented by this set of images is quite close to my expectationsâit preserves the unique charm of the 2D character while blending in a natural breathability through the real-scene shoot. I hope this light, shadow, and emotion can convey a peaceful visual experience. Actually, before the shoot, I spent a lot of effort organizing the wig. Although this kind of long, straight silver-white hair looks beautiful, it tangles very easily. So when bringing it on set, I used several different combs to maintain its smooth and glossy condition, alongside the layered curls of the bangs and sideburns. Additionally, though the rabbit plush is a small prop, I specifically chose one with a softer core, making it convenient to squeeze out different deformations when holding it to complement the camera; these fleeting, tiny details are major pluses in close-ups. This set also experimented with emotional expressions from different camera anglesâthe focal-less feel during close-ups and the relaxed state during full-body shots gave me a deeper understanding of Kasugano Sora, making it a highly exhilarating cosplay photoshoot experience as a girl in a white dress.
