[Touhou Project] Street Backlit Photography Blue Dress Cosplay Photo Return & Photoshoot Record

The location for this shoot was along a roadside in Guangzhou, mainly experimenting with a high-exposure Backlit photography style. For props, the transparent ice crystal wings on my back looked fantastic on camera, though the rigid plastic was quite brittle; crossing the street and navigating crowds required extreme caution, and I carefully cradled them the whole way. Because the Blue dress cosplay features a deep navy shade trimmed with white lace, brighter surroundings helped create a misty, ethereal ambiance reminiscent of water vapor. The photographer picked several spots, including roadside stone pillars, where I tried half-crouching, side-sitting, and resting a hand on my knee to better showcase the White tights long legs and the layered skirt ruffles. Detailed accents of this styling included the navy bow on the wig and the red-and-green necktie; to avoid stares from passersby, we aimed for quieter time slots. The red tie was fastened at the chest, requiring care when walking so it wouldn't obstruct the face. Shooting Outdoor street photography was actually more exhausting than indoor convention halls due to passing vehicles and gusty winds, requiring the photographer to accurately gauge wind direction and shifting light. During shooting, I adjusted my stances—trying poses like closing my eyes with hands clasped in prayer or resting my chin on one hand for a more natural look. We shot back and forth for a long time to ensure the angle of the wings was presented flawlessly in every frame without blocking my face or revealing flaws. The outdoor experience around Guangzhou COC was wonderful and proved to be a very satisfying shoot.

Regarding hair and makeup, to coordinate with this outfit, I applied a cool-toned light blue eyeshadow to give the eyes a clearer, purer look, paired with light-colored contacts that blended seamlessly with the wig tone. The wig had been layered and trimmed, but outdoor wind easily caused tangles, so I kept detangling spray in my bag for on-the-go maintenance. The deep blue bow had to be pinned very securely to prevent the wind from blowing it askew. The dress fabric was relatively structured, but the skirt's ruffles had to be manually smoothed out whenever sitting down to prevent awkward creases. During mid-shoot adjustments, I noticed that slightly tucking the chin, looking just past the lens, or gently closing my eyes conveyed that tranquil atmosphere best. Because the sunlight was strong, when the photographer framed a shot, I often shielded part of the glare with my hand or gently squinted before opening my eyes. Through this session, I became much more adept at managing facial expressions under intense outdoor light and safeguarding delicate props. Photographic gear was also crucial: a 50mm prime lens beautifully blurred the background into clean bokeh, giving me a profound appreciation for the power of light in outdoor shoots—truly the soul of photography. This experience provided fresh inspiration for future shoots to continue elevating this natural aesthetic.

Before shooting, I organized my thoughts because Outdoor street photography can easily turn mundane or rigid if one simply stands still. The photographer guided me to interact with surrounding elements—like leaning against a stone pillar, shifting weight onto one leg while gently brushing the skirt hem with the other hand to make leg lines look effortless. The thicker white stockings and black Mary Jane shoes were key accessories enhancing the character's innocence, and the clean texture of the footwear looked crisp on lens. Encountering pedestrians entering the frame is routine outdoors; we usually waited patiently or shifted angles temporarily. Being deeply immersed and constantly refining poses left my knees slightly sore afterward, but seeing the raw lighting and textures was immensely gratifying. These insights come from accumulated outdoor experience—such as managing cold sensitivity versus sweating under bright sun—making this winter-style dress ideal for early winter or early spring shoots. The natural lighting combined with the soft-focus trees and street background created a dreamy, translucent mood. For the common question of how to look fair outdoors, it largely relies on front- or back-lighting paired with subtle post-brightening. The final images achieved our vision, making this a deeply fulfilling creative endeavor for Touhou Project fans.
