[Marisa cosplay] Touhou Project: An Ordinary Magician of the Forest of Magic

Rounding up the Marisa photoshoot taken at the CPG08 convention. Heading into the event, I put substantial effort into preparing the wardrobe and signature props, and I'm thoroughly pleased with the final selects; let's dive into the behind-the-scenes nuances from the shoot.

On the wardrobe side, this classic monochrome witch dress for Marisa is packed with layered craftsmanship. The inner blouse is a short-sleeved white shirt trimmed with delicate lace, topped with a cropped black vest featuring golden front buttons and pentagram star accents. The lower half consists of a tiered black ruffled skirt; both the hem and the crisp white lace apron are dotted with purple ribbon bows, golden stars, and musical note appliques. For the wig, I selected golden-yellow tresses braided into a single long plait along the left side, bound with purple ribbons at both the base and tip, crowned by a broad-brimmed black pointed hat adorned with white frills and an oversized violet ribbon. For makeup, I wore golden-brown contact lenses and accentuated lower lash definition alongside contoured eyeshadow, striving to closely capture her spirited aura. In terms of props, I prepared an octagonal Mini-Hakkero and a traditional wooden-handled broom. The Hakkero is finished in black with white tracery, anchored by a central Taiji Yin-Yang emblem encircled by Bagua trigrams.

For the first bust-up shot, I propped the Hakkero beside my cheek while leaning subtly forward, drawing clear focus toward the hat contours and braided hair. For the second full-body frame, aiming for higher dynamic energy, I held the Hakkero aloft with one hand while clutching the broom behind my hip, balancing on a single leg to simulate kinetic broomstick flight. This pose demanded rigorous core stability and balance: because the broom is quite long and I was suspended on one foot, angles had to be adjusted repeatedly to avoid awkward perspective breaks. The third shot featured crossed legs, extending the Hakkero forward with one hand while leaning against the grounded broom with the other—a clean, poised stance ideal for showing off garment tailoring and props from every facet.

The convention floor featured a checkerboard grid of gray-and-white tiles beneath ambient ceiling tubes and glass curtain walls, offering even, diffused light; because of passing crowds, the photographer carefully framed shots to isolate me from background distractions, keeping visual focus squarely on the subject. Convention cosplay requires constant vigilance over wig styling and garment drapes; the voluminous tiered lace skirt easily snagged on steps, requiring me to lift the hem while walking. Holding the rigid, weighted Hakkero for extended intervals left my wrist rather sore, yet I powered through to ensure stellar frame dynamics. Though exhausting, witnessing that lively presence burst through the lens made every bit of preliminary crafting and on-site sweat thoroughly worthwhile. This shoot granted me an even deeper personal resonance with Marisa's kinetic mannerisms and spirited expressions.
