Today's photos were captured together with my photographer towards late spring, right when the flowers were in full bloom. I had wanted to try this classic cherry-pink outfit for Reimu Hakurei for a long time. As the iconic character of Touhou Project, her Shrine maiden outfit design is instantly recognizable, and choosing a style with pink and white as the main palette matched the romantic spring atmosphere even better.
Let's talk about the costume details first. The giant pink bow on top of the head is the soul of the entire look. To prevent it from looking clunky, a lightweight fabric with good structural support was specifically chosen, finished with delicate lace trimmings along the edges. Paired with two long pink ribbons, the entire silhouette around the head becomes instantly lively whenever a breeze blows. The outfit features kimono-like wide sleeves that unfold like petals as my arms move. A light blue bow accenting the neckline cuts through the sweetness of the pink, giving the overall color scheme more depth.
The lower skirt consists of layered ruffle paneling, with intricate embroidery patterns hidden on the surface, creating distinct movement when walking. The lace-edged white calf socks paired with black buckle chunky heels is a combination I personally love. The black shoes and white socks pairing not only visually elongates the legs, but also anchors the overall pink-and-white palette, preventing the look from feeling overly floaty due to light colors. The props used on the shoot day were also substantial—a golden bell wand hung with colorful ribbons. A gentle sway in hand produces a crisp ringing sound while flowing ribbons extend the pose's dynamic motion.
Choosing the outdoor location took considerable thought. It was peak cherry blossom season, surrounded by vast trees bursting with white and light pink blossoms, with purple wildflowers blanketing the ground. The high-key environment combined with a slightly overexposed backlit technique gave the entire image a light, translucent, dreamlike quality. To capture the most natural dynamics, we sought out several spots with favorable wind directions. My photographer @Yekong was extremely patient, repeatedly guiding me on timing when raising the bell and stretching my body into the wind. The dramatic wind effects in the photos were truly captured live by the natural breeze.
Running around in this outfit was actually quite physically demanding, especially with the giant bow and ribbons that easily got tangled in the wind or caught on tree branches. Yet, whenever I raised the bell or looked back into the camera lens, an instinctive sense of immersion welled up inside me. As the guardian of Gensokyo, Reimu Hakurei must also shuttle through spring scenery with such lively energy on a daily basis. Although this outfit carries strong 2D anime attributes, wearing it into this sea of flowers felt remarkably natural, seamlessly blending into the real environment. That experience of 2D meeting 3D reality is precisely where the joy of photography lies.
Regarding post-processing, we preserved a high-brightness soft-light effect rather than artificially deepening shadows, emphasizing translucent pinks and crisp whites. Adding a few floating petals in the air as atmospheric accents brought unity to the entire photo set. I hope these photos convey the relaxing ambiance of a spring breeze laden with floral scent, serving as a tribute to Touhou Project and the iconic cherry-pink Shrine maiden image. Producing a work I'm satisfied with is the best reward for all the preparation during this period.
