The location for this photoshoot was chosen at a lush forest park (Forest exterior), where the refreshing greenery perfectly complemented the background lore of the Hakurei Shrine maiden. Because this red-and-white Shrine maiden outfit features high color saturation, it created a striking visual contrast against the deep green woodland. Paired with Geta and white crew socks, it not only retained the character's iconic elements, but the clacking sound of Geta tapping on the ground also added great immersion to hunting youkai in the woods. The large red bow and trailing ribbons fluttering in the breeze became some of the most vibrant details across the entire photo set.
The greatest challenge during the shoot was the immense demand on physical stamina and balance. Wearing thick-soled Geta on wooden walkways and mossy rocks required constant caution—a single misstep could cause slipping, keeping us on edge throughout the session. To convey the character's airy, leaping combat poise, I constantly adjusted my center of gravity. We attempted one-legged balances and skirt-lifting poses multiple times; waving spell cards and turning around happened in split seconds, relying entirely on the photographer's keen eye and candid shutter timing. In particular, for the shot standing on a rock in the stream, the perch was narrow and slippery, requiring extensive repositioning to find a secure foothold that balanced pose aesthetics with safety. Whenever my legs grew sore, seeing the fluttering wide sleeves and skirt hem on camera made every bit of fatigue worthwhile.
Lighting in the forest shifted quickly. Sometimes, waiting for a gust of wind or a ray of sunlight filtering through the canopy meant holding position for long stretches; when that beam hit the red garment, it felt as though the character herself was glowing. The setting was wonderful—streams, moss, and stone steps created rich textural depth. Although insects were quite active, seeing the finished color grading made all the hardship completely worthwhile.
Collaborating with photographer Fengzi Yun was effortless and harmonious. He possessed a deep understanding of composition, especially when handling backlighting and background bokeh, turning lush leaves into soft, dreamy light orbs that integrated the subject seamlessly into nature. His posing guidance—glancing back while lifting the skirt, daydreaming against a wooden railing, or walking up stone steps away from the camera—beautifully captured the character's temperament. While centered on a youkai-extermination theme, navigating this natural environment felt more like an authentic forest adventure. Through these gestures and captured expressions, I strove to faithfully recreate that spirited shrine maiden. This shoot provided immense inspiration: the pairing of Geta, flowing sleeves, and waterfall scenery created a wonderful chemical reaction, and I look forward to trying more dynamic poses or special effect props next time to elevate this blend of cool composure and agile grace.
