Found some old stock of convention photos from a previous anime convention. It just so happens that this Patchouli look has never been formally sorted and posted. Looking at the photos today, I think the results are quite good, so I picked a few to share. This outfit took a long time to prepare, with details refined from pattern making to fabric selection.
Let's first talk about the overall coordination of this costume, which is mainly based on black and white color-blocking combined with a large area of lace and mesh. The hair accessories on the head use a light purple base paired with black ruffles, and the layered texture makes the top of the head look full. The wig also matches with the corresponding light purple long straight hair. The off-shoulder and open-back design on the upper part of the dress is paired with fine black lace trim and mesh material, allowing the skin tone to peek through, so the overall look doesn't feel dull due to too much fabric. The stockings on the lower body adopt an asymmetrical mix-and-match design: one side is a pure black over-knee stocking with a thigh ring adorned with black ruffles and bows tied at the edge of the sock cuff, while the other side is a black fishnet patterned tights outfit. This asymmetry is visually very layered and perfectly fits the effect I wanted in the styling design. The multi-layered wide cuffs on the hands are also pieced together with semi-transparent lace and polyester fabric, carrying a strong classical magician style.
For the makeup, the eye makeup this time is slightly heavier, paired with detailed eyeliner to make the gaze look deeper, and the lips are painted with a rosy lip gloss. The small black patch under the cheek is actually a symbol decoration I simply drew myself, giving the overall facial look more recognizability and character traits. Coordinated with this hairstyle under the convention's cool-toned indoor light, the skin tone looks very fair and clean.
In terms of props, I prepared an open spiral notebook and a few pieces of distressed parchment. In the first and third photos, my movements of holding the paper or resting my chin in my hand perfectly fit her vibe of often staying in the library to study magic books. When shooting this kind of convention photo, to avoid the messy floor of the exhibition hall, a white plush mat was specially laid on the ground to create a relatively clean and comfortable small shooting space. The notes and pen casually placed beside added a life-like randomness to the frame.
Regarding the shooting scene, since it was in the interior space of a public anime convention, the background inevitably captured passing crowds, suitcases, or booth areas. However, the photographer used a large aperture to blur the background, which just happened to suppress the noisy environment and focus all the emphasis on the character subject. The shoot worked with the scattered lights of the exhibition hall without extra strong lighting, so the shadow transitions in the frame are quite natural, and the black lace edges can present the fabric's own sheen. The cool-toned atmosphere instead fits the mysterious temperament carried by the clothing.
Honestly, the hardest part of shooting a convention photo is maintaining confidence under everyone's gaze, while striking natural poses and making sure not to block the path behind. Fortunately, the mobility of this outfit is decent, so sitting on the ground making various hand gestures didn't feel too restricted. The white plush mat formed a sharp contrast with the nearby dark coat hem, and combined with the visual focus of the asymmetrical stockings on the legs, I am quite satisfied with the frozen moments in these few photos. Sorting through this stock this time is mainly to commemorate the completion of this look; when good-textured fabric and dedicated makeup/styling melt together, the remaining photos always bring joy to the creator.
