[Flandre Scarlet Cosplay] A Red and White Fantasy Journey at the Touhou Project Convention

During this shoot at the convention venue, the ambient light was actually quite messy, but the photographer made great use of the existing diffuse reflection and high overhead lights to cast a beautiful rim light on my head. This added a wonderful sense of depth to what would have been a rather dull grey background.

When putting together this outfit, I placed a strong emphasis on controlling the overall texture and accessories. The short blonde wig was styled with subtle layers, which, paired with the elf ears, red eye makeup, and forehead decoration, beautifully conveyed that slightly mysterious yet childlike vibe in front of the camera. The details of the dress are extremely intricate, featuring white satin spliced with layers of cascading lace, combined with a wine-red corset band and bow tie. This red-and-white color scheme carries a powerful visual impact. The skirt hem was designed with numerous pleats, allowing me to move around and sit down—even on the ladder—without feeling restricted at all.

The shoes are custom-made thick-soled lace-up heels, paired with long white over-the-knee socks. While visually elongating my proportions, this lolita-style outfit also fits the character's temperament perfectly. The teddy bear plush in my hands served as a core interactive prop for the day. Since the look itself has a fairy-tale quality, holding it or raising it up made my poses feel natural and unforced. I also brought along a string of colorful crystal ornaments nearby; the light refracting off them at different angles perfectly filled the empty color spaces at the edges of the frame.

To capture natural poses, I mostly improvised instead of forcing stiff, planned movements. The photographer's shutter speed paired wonderfully with the raw pace of the convention, letting me get into character quickly. Although the Golden Dolphin venue was indoors, the open space provided some excellent composition angles. Once you immerse your emotions into the character, making subtle gestures toward the teddy bear and letting your gaze drift slightly, the atmospheric feel of the photos naturally flows out.

Overall, the restoration process was highly enjoyable, and the costume was quite comfortable—aside from the wig feeling a bit stuffy on my head, the entire experience was a wonderful convention record. For a coser, meeting a photographer who knows how to use light and capture expressions during a casual shoot is incredibly important. We also shot in several different settings at the venue; besides the ladder, there were a few sets under natural light on the ground level, but I personally prefer these few images I'm posting today because the overhead lighting outlined my silhouette so clearly, making the lace edges and strands of hair glow.

Returning to the character itself, under the red and white theme, there is actually a slight sense of detachment. This contrast is exactly where the charm of such characters lies, so I tried to keep my emotional expressions somewhat reserved, with a faint gaze of scrutiny and indifference, rather than forcing a smile at the camera. Many cosers tend to overlook the process of merging the character with themselves during convention photo returns. Actually, spending just ten more minutes absorbing the atmosphere of the venue and familiarizing yourself with your props will yield a much higher rate of great photos.

Lastly, I'm also really happy with the makeup this time. It wasn't overly heavy, preserving a sense of transparency that paired beautifully with the light and airy garments. This also saved quite a bit of effort in post-processing, as the color tones of the raw photos were already very comfortable. That is the story behind this set of convention photos.
