The first thing I did after receiving this Kochiya Sanae cosplay outfit was style that signature long, straight green wig. To faithfully recreate the crisp, blunt bangs and neat sidelocks, I spent hours trimming it against the official character references and smoothing down the hair ends. The hair accessories required numerous bobby pins to stay firmly anchored by the ears; otherwise, walking around the bustling convention would have caused them to slip off easily. The garment features far more intricacies than I had anticipated, incorporating abundant lace trims and subtle jacquard textures across the blue-and-white fabrics. The obi sash in particular, made of a traditional Japanese-style brocade, tended to wrinkle easily and required constant smoothing during fitting, while pulling the rear lacing taut to ensure the waistline contoured cleanly.

Speaking of Sanae, everyone naturally pictures the gohei wand in her grasp, which became the central focus of our shoot. Its wooden shaft and golden spherical ornament caught magnificent reflections under the daylight, though the prop carried noticeable weight that definitely strained my wrist when held one-handed over long periods. The long colorful streamers also gave us quite a workout. Designed to enhance dynamic motion, they proved tricky in the convention's strong outdoor wind—frequently tangling together or whipping right across my face. Sweeping them into a graceful, cinematic arc often took several repeated takes.

The shooting took place along the perimeter of the convention center. Sunlight was ample that day, so to complement the palette of the outfit and props, the photographer sought out darker background areas, utilizing a wide aperture to melt away surrounding architecture and passersby into soft bokeh, allowing the blue-and-white wardrobe and emerald hair to pop with vivid clarity. For the poses, I avoided overly convoluted body contortions, focusing instead on Sanae's confident, earnest aura as the Wind Priestess. Gripping the gohei required a posture that felt relaxed yet empowered; raising my other arm skyward visually elongated the overall frame.

In one particular shot, the gohei points directly toward the lens—a dynamic foreshortening effect the photographer and I experimented with together. Thrusting the staff forward and letting shallow depth of field softly blur its tip drew viewer focus squarely onto the character's facial expression and gaze. Touhou Project cosplay truly tests one's grasp of character lore: Kochiya Sanae is not merely a shrine maiden, but a living god (arahitogami), possessing an earnest determination to strive tirelessly toward her goals. To channel that presence on site, I kept my eyes resolute while maintaining an effortless, composed smile.

The entire shoot essentially unfolded amidst continuous hair smoothing, streamer untangling, and wardrobe adjusting. Though it was hot and exhausting out in the elements, previewing the camera monitor and watching the character materialize into reality felt purely magical. These photos capture my presence at the convention and stand as a heartfelt, dedicated tribute to the character.
