[D.Va Cosplay] Overwatch Luna the Black Cat Studio Shoot Log

Getting straight into the studio shoot for this Overwatch D.Va cosplay of Luna the Black Cat. This time I tried out the classic design of Luna the Black Cat, with an overall styling focused on a striking color combination of black, purple, and magenta.

First, let's talk about the costume details. The black cat-ear headband at the top sets a playful foundation tone, while the paired blonde twintail wig uses a soft material with layered trimming. Combined with hot pink bow accessories, it gives a very youthful look visually. The top features a subtle jacquard black fabric with a striking large pink bow at the collar. Shaping this bow took quite a bit of time, requiring repeated adjustments to stiffness and pleats to ensure it wouldn't sag on camera. The pearl belt at the waist is one of the highlights of this outfit, breaking up the heavy black area with its delicate embellishments. The skirt hem is a purple-and-black color-blocked design with ruffled edges on the black sections. I made a point to showcase the skirt during the shoot; there's actually a white lining underneath ensuring that even high leg-lifts won't cause wardrobe mishaps, providing plenty of layered dimension.

The black-and-purple diamond-pattern tights on the lower body serve as the visual focal point of this outfit. If the pattern isn't pulled straight, it easily looks messy around the knees, so I meticulously straightened it multiple times before shooting to ensure the diamond shapes looked crisp on camera. Paired with black patent leather chunky heels, it both elongates the leg line and stabilizes my standing pose. The prop gun in hand was custom-made by a prop master based on the original design, featuring a matte black finish with pink circular emblems on the side. A pink ribbon with a yellow charm is tied to the handle. Holding it felt heavier than expected, but it actually made the gun-pointing poses look more natural and dynamic.

When taking these photos, photographer @Chitanda and I mainly wanted to recreate an exquisite, mini-figurine feel. Since the studio backdrop was pure white paired with a platform stand, the overall composition was clean without distracting elements, which meant poses couldn't look stiff. The poses shown here were all results of on-site fine-tuning. In Photo 1, with hands behind my back and my center of gravity leaning slightly forward, I aimed for a shy, cute vibe. Photo 2 features one hand on the hip while raising the gun and subtly lifting the left leg—a posture testing core and leg strength while showcasing the prop gun, skirt, and tights from great angles. Photo 3 shows holding the gun with both hands, requiring a firmer gaze to simulate a combat observation stance. Photo 4 is a candid mid-air jump shot, offering the most comprehensive look at the outfit, bringing motion to the otherwise static skirt and diamond-pattern tights.

The Luna the Black Cat skin carries a sense of nostalgia from classic Overwatch skin design. Revisiting this style that blends anime cuteness with mecha battle elements really tests the harmony of makeup, costume, and props. Throughout the shoot, the photographer avoided complex lighting, relying mainly on soft, flat illumination to highlight the costume textures and facial features without heavy shadows obscuring details. Looking back at the final shots, that unique balance of the original design shines through—not overly sweet, yet retaining the agile, youthful battle stance of the character. I hope this set conveys that retro yet lighthearted feel inherent to the original design.
