The concept behind this shoot was clearly defined from the start: centering on cat ears, a feline tail, and cozy domestic languor. In pre-shoot discussions with the photographer, we chose to ditch convoluted backdrops and studio setups, redirecting our focus entirely toward authentic living spaces. I chose a wardrobe of staple pieces—an oversized sage-green tee paired with dark sweatpants and casual shorts, topped with a mint-green short bob. Wearing this not only kept me relaxed, but also let the camera easily capture an organic, lived-in aura. We kept prop styling minimal, utilizing everyday household items like potted houseplants, soda cans, beverage bottles, and routine clutter. As these elements gathered beneath the natural light pouring through the window, the frame instantly established a distinct atmospheric charm.
During shooting, ambient room light proved to be the ultimate filter. This was especially true across the kitchen counter and bedroom window frames, where sunlight filtered softly through sheer white curtains. To convey the sprightly nuance of the cat ear cosplay, I tested diverse postures: perching along the countertop absentmindedly fidgeting with props, sitting cross-legged with a subtle head tilt, and lounging prone across the hardwood looking directly up at the lens. The photographer continually guided me to stay loose without forcing stiff poses. Beyond basic standing and crouching, I frequently leaned into bent knees, hugging my shins, or half-reclined poses to let natural bodily contours unfold without losing that unhurried, indolent feline temperament.
In the bedroom, blue polka-dot bedding provided a cool-toned visual extension. To break visual monotony, holding an aluminum can or a vape gave my hands intuitive gestures while shifting my gaze in harmony with camera angles—sometimes gazing pensively out the window, other times locking eyes directly with the glass to craft an effortless, candid anime-style photography aesthetic. Plants hanging along the walls and well-thumbed books on the shelves served as genuine footprints of daily life, lending authentic narrative depth and rich layers to the images.
While many believe cosplay must always adhere to strict character recreations, I find taking an open theme without specific character constraints and integrating personal traits into everyday scenes is far more challenging and tests one's expressive range. Wearing cat ears and a tail is not without hassle; sitting down easily crushes a plush tail, requiring constant repositioning so it peaks into the composition at flattering angles to inject dynamic visual movement. Tedious as these micro-adjustments are, seeing those unforced, candid moments frozen on camera makes every effort feel worthwhile.
The original intent of this set was documenting an unconstrained state of relaxation. Free of artificial studio strobes or heavy compositing, simply relying on natural daylight while preserving lower saturation and cool undertones yields a clean, luminous aesthetic. For props, I deliberately chose items that felt cohesive; cigarettes and bottles represent common decompression items in adult daily life, creating a whimsical contrast against the kemonomimi girl elements and introducing an authentic, subtly melancholic yet endearing charm.
The process felt less like a formal shoot and more like a fluid, intuitive collaboration. Without needing to mimic anyone, channeling immediate sensations granted the photos a life of their own.
