The red-and-white color scheme along with this gohei basically covers all of Reimu Hakurei's iconic elements from Touhou Project. For this photo set, the overall shoot aimed to highlight Reimu's unique temperamentāboth casual and carrying a hint of a solemn cleric.
In terms of costume and styling, this red-and-white shrine maiden outfit was crafted to accurately replicate the original illustration. The cuffs feature red-and-white patterned borders, and the fabric was chosen to show a nice luster under the lights, adding more texture. For the wig, since Reimu has a vast amount of hair and her iconic giant red-and-white bow, it placed high demands on the volume and securing of the hairstyle. The makeup artist put a lot of effort into the wig handling and color coordination, especially the eye makeup paired with the pupil color, hoping to give her eyes a cleric's insight while retaining a touch of a girl's agility.
The control of light and shadow during the shoot was also a key focus. Utilizing a large area of soft light in the studio, combined with a background of white tulle curtains and grey stone formations, we constructed a shooting space that was both clean and carried a hint of shrine solemnity. For the props, the gohei and amulets in hand were the crowning touches. The amulets were custom-made to specific sizes and patterns, giving them a solid feel in hand. To showcase Reimu from different perspectives, besides front close-ups, we also attempted movements like turning around while holding the gohei and the moment of lightly flipping the hair tips, ensuring this shrine maiden cosplay has a dynamic feel while maintaining the character's inherent composed temperament.
As the shrine maiden of the Hakurei Shrine, maintaining the balance of Gensokyo is her daily life, but the her presented in this photoshoot looks more like someone you'd encounter during a leisurely afternoon. To me, taking every cosplay seriously means not only recreating the character's appearance but also feeling and understanding the character's state within a specific time and space. Although the scene setting for this photo set was relatively simple, it was perfect for using clean frames to express the visual impact of Reimu's red-and-white color scheme. Now that the raw photos have been retouched, the texture of the final results feels truly satisfying.
