[Asuma Toki cosplay] Afternoon light and shadow at Guangzhou BAonly

This time at the Guangzhou BAonly event, I finally shot this everyday uniform look for Asuma Toki. I had always wanted to find a clean, translucent outdoor environment to capture her quiet yet playful aura. The corridor platform surrounding the convention hall happened to have brilliant lighting, where glass railings and stone steps harmonized perfectly with her original school setting. The white shirt paired with a light blue bow tie and dark blue pleated skirt, along with a color-matched cardigan tied around the waist, gave the overall look a far richer sense of layering than expected. The iconic blue-and-white halo overhead was temporarily made using 3D-printed parts and acrylic; though slightly heavy, wearing it instantly elevated the atmosphere. To recreate its precise geometric details, I adjusted the magnetic attachment positions multiple times before achieving a satisfying result.

During the shoot, we specifically chose 3 to 4 PM natural sunlight. The backlight hit the platinum-blonde long wig, creating a soft halo glow along the hair edges that felt exceptionally gentle. While seated, pairing a Uniform with white tights and black loafers required careful consideration: improper sock length or heel height would make the legs appear short, so I specifically selected thick-soled loafers to elongate proportions naturally. When carrying the blue canvas tote bag, my fingertips rested lightly on the strap and fold edges without exerting force to avoid stiffness—details refined through repeated trial before the lens. Poses like lifting one leg to point directions or making a peace sign aimed to simulate her usual lively, slightly spacey charm, yet my gaze had to stay composed rather than overly bouncy, staying true to her quiet yet quick-witted character setting.

The venue was quite crowded as we shot on a public corridor platform, with pedestrians passing by occasionally. However, the photographer expertly caught background gaps, pressing the shutter whenever the background cleared up. Warning signs on the glass, such as "No Climbing," were somewhat breaking immersion, yet they represented the authentic atmosphere surrounding a Guangzhou Anime Convention—leaving a touch of real-life flavor actually made the scene feel more genuine. To dodge harsh overhead sunlight, we stayed along the shadow edges of the eaves, letting side lighting carve facial contours while preserving highlight details on the white shirt. This lighting approach placed far less pressure on post-processing, requiring only basic color grading for direct output.

I also tried new techniques for makeup. Since Toki's eyes are a clear lake blue in lore, I chose small-diameter blue contact lenses paired with slightly elongated eyeliner to deepen my gaze, while keeping lip color a soft nude pink to avoid stealing focus from the cool blue-and-white theme. The wig underwent prior styling: beyond standard bang trimming, hidden hair ties were added inside the back hair to prevent it from scattering into chaos when turning—especially for the backward glance shot in photo three, which would have lost its shape in the wind without secure fastening.

Overall, the experience at Guangzhou BAonly was fantastic; shooting outdoors felt far more relaxing than indoors without queuing in studio zones, allowing us to discover plenty of natural framing compositions. Carrying this equipment across various corners left my feet aching, yet seeing the refreshing color tones and expected expressions in final frames made all preparations worthwhile. Garment details—including bow tie tightness, skirt length, and waist-tied cardigan knots—were repeatedly cross-referenced with official art; though perspective angles differ in 2D art, real-life wear must balance aesthetics with mobility.
