Shooting an industrial style portrait of a character in an abandoned factory has always been a theme I really wanted to try. This time, I happened to realize this wish with Section Chief Miyabi's look. Coupled with the huge gears, rusty mechanical equipment, and yellow safety railings around us, the mottled and rough industrial texture forms a strong visual contrast with this sleek, capable blue, white, and black uniform, giving the final shots a bit of a hardcore and post-apocalyptic wasteland atmosphere.
Next, let's talk about the details of the character's restoration. The jacket features a loose-fitting haori cut with black straps and yellow accents on the shoulders, and distinct white diamond patterns on the hem, layered together with a pure white shirt and a black tie to create a very rich sense of layering. The yellow tassels on the belt and the pendants with geometric elements add a pop of bright highlight to the overall deep color palette. The black pleated skirt on the lower body is paired with a black tights outfit, and stepped into a pair of black chunky-heeled ankle boots with metallic buckles, which not only elongates the body proportions but also perfectly fits the character's swift, resolute, and valiant combat style.
In terms of props, the mechanical-joined long blade in my hand is also quite substantial. The black, white, and gray color-blocked design adorned with orange lines has an exceptional texture under the dim light of the factory. To complement this outfit, I specifically restored the straight black hair with blunt bangs wig. The makeup emphasized and enhanced the brow and eye contours. Combined with the red irises and contact lenses, along with high-cold expression management, when my gaze settles down, it truly captures the character's sharp and fierce sense of "eradicating evil completely."
We adjusted the lighting on the day of the shoot back and forth for a long time. Because the light inside the factory was uneven, we used a combination of top light, side light, and spotlights to create a high-contrast light and shadow effect. Throughout the afternoon, we tried many action compositions. For example, the crouching slash pose requires the body's center of gravity to be pressed low, while the gaze lines up toward the top of the lens. There is also a deep squint with one hand extended, which highly tests the extension and power of the limbs. The photographer crawled on the ground to find angles, and together with the cracked concrete floor and rusty pipes, beautifully presented the texture of the jacket and wig under the light.
In fact, executing anime cosplay with such large ranges of motion is always a significant test of physical stamina. The clothes actually have a certain weight and thickness, and plus the weight of the prop, maintaining a single posture in place while repeatedly adjusting the lights and camera positions is quite exhausting. But the charm of anime cosplay lies exactly in this kind of immersive experience that breaks the dimensional wall. Putting on this outfit and standing in this specific scene, I am no longer myself; instead, I need to feel the character's personality and her combat posture. Therefore, for every swing of the sword and every posture leaning against the railings, I tried my best to fit the character herself, interpreting her unique aura and tension.
For the final images, there was no excessive skin smoothing in post-processing, preserving the texture of the skin and the high-contrast ambient light of the location. I hope this set of photos can convey my understanding of this costume and this character, allowing the frame to have a bit of authentic power and fewer traces of forced posing. Filming a good set of works is inseparable from the mutual cooperation of team members, from makeup and hair to costumes, props, and then to the scheduling of photography and lighting; the dedication in every step will manifest in the final images. I hope everyone likes this industrial style portrait perspective of cosplay work.
