[Misaki cosplay] Outdoor New Year Shoot for Blue Archive, A Refreshing Qipao Cosplay Look

This set of photos completed under outdoor natural light counts as a rather satisfying shutter record during the New Year convention period.

This time I cosplayed Misaki from Blue Archive. The entire look uses white and red as the main visual base, and this modified Qipao looks exceptionally clean under natural light. The red frog closures at the collar, the red straps on the chest, and the red borders on the skirt hem form a sharp contrast against the white base material. There is also a delicate layer of white lace trimming along the lower edge of the skirt hem.

The wig is traditional long straight black hair with blunt bangs, with a silver crescent-shaped hair accessory secured on top of the head, and red bows and draping tassels interspersed between the hair strands. The long tassels sway gently when walking, adding a sense of motion to the frame.

The black stockings on the legs are paired with white high heels. The length of the over-the-knee socks creates a perfect gradient right at the slit of the skirt hem, elongating the proportions while reinforcing the Qipao's inherent blend of elegance and playfulness.

Holding a red-bottomed scroll with gold characters wishing good fortune for the New Year, it serves as the visual focus during the outdoor shoot, effectively softening the harshness brought by the direct light, while the golden text and red background on the scroll naturally align with the Spring Festival shooting theme.

The surroundings of the Guangzhou Anime Convention are actually highly suitable for this kind of natural light outdoor shoot. The background features both modern architectural glass curtain walls and large patches of green shrubs. When there is no absolutely perfect indoor convention set, this outdoor environment provides a wonderful alternative pairing.

The midday sun is technically overhead lighting, but if you find the right angle, you can still capture beautiful rim light. The focus of this shoot lay right in controlling the harsh overhead light, making it a highlight rather than a source of overexposure. The shadows on the ground sometimes became part of the composition as well.

When standing, I paid attention to keeping my posture upright, balancing the visuals by holding the scroll with one hand or lifting my hair. For the sitting pose, I chose to sit on the ground with both legs extending to one side, which perfectly showcased the visual effect of the Qipao slit and the long black socks, while allowing my gaze to communicate directly with the camera.

With people coming and going during the convention, finding a clean background required a bit of patience. Fortunately, the weather was great, and the clarity of the natural light meant the overall color grading didn't need major adjustments. The photographer, Orange Peel, is highly experienced in capturing motion and mastering the light, resulting in a high success rate for the photos.

Before setting out, I had to ensure the headpiece was secured tightly enough; after all, outdoor shoots involve wind and poses with a wide range of motion. The fit of the costume also determines one's confidence during the shoot. The preparations for costumes, makeup, and props were quite thorough this time, especially the tailor's stitching on the clothing, which was exquisite and showed no flaws even under close-up shots.

The overall tone of the photo set leans toward fresh and natural, without relying excessively on flamboyant post-processing special effects. The white modified Qipao and black long socks constitute the visual grayscale base, with the red banner serving as an embellishment without being overly conspicuous.

The tailoring of this Qipao actually places great emphasis on the waistline; the cinched-waist design paired with the high slit can beautifully outline the body curves in a standing pose, while the skirt hem spreads out naturally when sitting down.

During the shoot, we also tried some dynamic snapshots, such as the moment my hair tossed. Although these are static photographs, the lightness of the posture can convey a natural aura of being in motion.

The outdoor air in Guangzhou is quite clear and the light is abundant, so the reflections in the pupils are crystal clear. Under this direct natural light, the skin texture and costume materials are clearly restored, which is one of the reasons why I favor natural light photography.

The most interesting part of a convention is being able to take a character you've carefully prepared and interact with a real-world setting. With the light being just right and the styling fitting perfectly, this set of photos for New Year Misaki came into being naturally.
