This set of Utau's fan-made design Gothic black dress finally got satisfactory convention photos at this anime convention. The overall design concept leans towards dark Gothic Lolita; the upper body with a corset shape is covered with intricate lace patterns, metal chains at the waist and ruffles at the neckline create a style contrast, and the lower body features multi-layered, irregularly cut skirt hems. Black fingerless leather gloves paired with glossy high heels, plus black stockings, maximize the character's sharpness.
For the wig, I really want to thank the wig stylist You-ran for being super clever. Ensuring the thickness and fluffiness of the extra-long blonde twin-tails on both sides while keeping them from getting frizzy under the strong wind at the convention site took a lot of effort in styling and maintenance. The blunt bangs plus the volume modification on both sides, paired with purple-red contact lenses and reddish-pink blended eye makeup around the eyes, gave a spot-on doll-like and ruthless feel during close-ups. To match the flowing dynamic of the hair, a black mini top hat with mesh and metal chains was also decorated on the head.
The convention venue space is very large, with cool-toned steel structures and neatly arranged ceiling lights on top. Photographer Li-chen understands this kind of cold atmosphere capture very well, utilizing the venue lighting and reflective ground to shoot a very translucent cool-toned texture. During the shoot, a fan was deliberately added on the side to let the twin-tails fly to both sides with the wind direction, coupled with the crossed sitting posture on a black high stool, the visual impact of both full-body and half-body close-ups is very strong.
When posing, I focused on portraying the character's lazy yet somewhat arrogant state. Picture one is a full-body distant view, focusing on displaying the layers of the skirt hem, leg lines, and the aura of the whole scene, with the high heels stepping on the stool leg to create a sense of readiness as if about to stand up at any time. Picture two is a half-body close-up with the camera shooting slightly upwards, one hand resting on the leg and the other hand gently touching the top hat; this perspective can better highlight the tailoring of the chest and waist, as well as the texture of the leather gloves, which, combined with the chilly gaze, vividly expresses the dark Gothic atmosphere.
Every time I do a fan-made design, it's a brand new challenge, from the detail adjustments of the clothes to the finalization of the makeup, and then communicating the light and shadow angles with the photographer on-site. The cold light of the venue hitting the blonde hair and black dress formed a very strong contrast of light and shadow. The shooting environment at the anime convention is actually very noisy, but during those few seconds in front of the camera, I was completely immersed in the character's state. This set of pictures took a lot of thought from preparation to release, and I hope to capture the charm of this black-and-gold Gothic style.
