This Wang Zhaojun Phoenixes Flying Together skin entered intense preparations the moment I decided to do it. Because the character's attire layers are highly complex, our team did several costume trials before and after, from the volume of the hairstyle to the folding layers of the skirt hem, wishing to get as close as possible to that mythical gorgeousness in the poster. Many people feel this kind of fantasy style makeup and styling is very easy, but in fact, just that head of long white hair took the stylist nearly an hour and a half. We needed to prop up the hair roots with hairspray and styling spray to maintain that high-soaring yet non-slumping state on top of the head, while making flowing lines at the hair ends as if blown by wild winds.
During the shoot, my biggest challenge wasn't actually expressions, but controlling the body's center of gravity. The golden crown on top of the head looks exceptionally exquisite from afar, but the actual material holds a substantial weight, and the flame-like or dry-branch-like extended shapes on both sides would strain the hair and ears when making slightly large movements. When completing this pose of standing on a single leg and leaning the body forward, I had to tightly lock my core strength at all times. This movement is an extreme test of balance; I had to use the bottom of my right foot to single-point grip the wooden platform steadily, while stretching the lines of my left leg straight, pressing the toes downward as much as possible to make the muscle lines of the thigh and calf look much sharper on camera. In the exact fraction of a second when the photographer pressed the shutter, I also had to coordinate with my forward-extended arm, letting the silhouette of the entire body form a dynamic diagonal line.
The combination of clothing materials is also a highlight of this shoot. The white and gold fabrics on the upper body are layered together, carrying a multi-dimensional voluminous feel resembling feathers, which, paired with the golden armor accessories at the waist, reflects highly soft halos under the illumination of warm light. The lower red-and-gold color-blocked short skirt hem has clear layers, spreading out slightly with the single-leg standing posture, strongly resembling burning flames. To present this flowing yet untangled texture, I didn't even dare to do large spinning movements on set, only relying on subtle posture adjustments to control the gravitational direction of the skirt hem. The light brown leg-guard boots on the feet feature fine dark-textured reliefs, which not only fit tightly with the leg lines but also add to the weightiness of the overall styling.
The overall light and shadow atmosphere is the heavy highlight polished in post-production. On-site we set up multiple groups of warm light sources, especially red-and-yellow color-blocked color temperature lights, used to render this blazing atmosphere as if a phoenix is undergoing rebirth. Those floating tiny sparks and winding golden light threads in the background were all synthesized in post-production, cooperating with the dry reed-like plant props placed on-site to create a strong sense of depth. To make this mythical color even more intense, I intentionally held back my expressions, using no smiles, but adopting a cool, serene gaze staring into the distance to reinforce that noble yet divine-filled detachment of the character.
Shooting this set of photos was truly a dual consumption of physical stamina and brainpower, from wearing complex decorations to maintaining high-difficulty postures, needing to find the best body force point within a few seconds every single time. But seeing that frame where blazing flames and white feathers interweave ultimately frozen down, I feel that all previous preparations were completely worth it. A good work doesn't just rely on a one-click color swap in post-production, but more on the authentic bodily sensation after putting on the clothes in the early stage, the solid feeling of gripping the ground firmly with the soles of the feet, and the confidence transmitted through the gaze. I hope that through this photo, viewers can perceive the beauty we want to convey—one that moves with ease between heat and cold serenity.
