To shoot Honoka Kosaka for the Love Live! 9th anniversary, I went through extensive pre-production preparation for both the wardrobe and styling. The moment I received this 9th anniversary Idol stage costume, the first thing that caught my attention was the textile texture. The outer red fabric carries structural firmness, nicely preserving the tailored silhouette of the shoulders and cuffs, whereas the inner skirt tiers utilize a breezy, lightweight material that flutters effortlessly during dynamic action. The navy-blue vest serves as the core of the ensemble, where the white crisscross lace-up ribbons and golden buttons each required precise positioning. To prevent creases on camera, I meticulously ironed every pleat across the skirt hem before heading to the set.
For the wig, to authentically recreate Honoka's signature medium orange locks, I trimmed and sculpted the hair tracks well in advance. The crown required an airy, rounded lift, while the soft curls at the ends needed to remain lively without appearing stiff. The matching red, white, and blue bow headpiece was anchored with several bobby pins to ensure it wouldn't shift during high jumps. The makeup focused sharply on the vivid blue contacts; to harmonize with the eye color, I laid down an orange-brown eyeshadow base, subtly winged out the eyeliner, and added natural false lashes to give the eyes extra sparkle. The foundation was kept fresh and radiant, with blush applied slightly high on the apples of the cheeks to accentuate her vibrant, cheerful energy whenever I smiled.
Executing this photoshoot was an intense workout of physical endurance. To embody the theme of a live stage performance, I explored numerous dynamic action poses. For instance, extending both arms fully outward looks simple, but demands an erect back and lowered shoulders to create graceful lines through the arms. The airborne jump required solid core strength to stabilize the body at the apex while keeping facial expressions completely composed. Because the skirt features an asymmetrical, multi-layered cut that is shorter in front and longer in back, jumping and spinning meant keeping close track of the lining to avoid wardrobe malfunctions while preserving an airy visual effect. The heeled tall boots visually elongated my leg lines, yet increased the difficulty of balancing on one leg or sticking jump landings, demanding precise control over my center of gravity.
Calibrating the studio lighting also required dedicated time. Sharp contrasts of red and blue easily suffer from color shifts or glare under bright lights, so the photographer deployed softboxes to preserve the fabric's authentic saturation and the metallic sheen of the golden embroidery. Against a solid pink backdrop, the subject's color contrast is naturally amplified, so the photographer continually guided my positioning to prevent drifting toward the frame edges. In terms of facial control, maintaining a bright, sunny presence was key without letting the gaze turn vacant. Before every shutter click, I quickly reset my breathing, tapping into that radiant confidence of projecting energy outward to an audience. Although leaping and readjusting poses repeatedly drained my stamina, remembering the vibrant stage presence of this costume quickly restored my momentum.
Overall, immense effort went into everything from verifying garment details to polishing stage-worthy poses. Choosing a clean solid backdrop instead of complex sets allowed the visual impact of the character and costume to take center stage. Seeing the vivid colors and confident expression in the final frames made all the preparation worthwhile. This 9th anniversary look for Honoka Kosaka is profoundly iconic in both color scheme and silhouette, and I hope these photos convey that sparkling radiance under the spotlight in this Stage cosplay.
