This time cosplaying Chrome from Hitman Reborn! ten years later can be considered a small challenge for myself. Because ten years later, she is not only more mature and glamorous in temperament, but her resolute feeling in battle is intertwined with her inner softness, and this sense of contradiction needs to be presented through the ultimate control of styling details.
Let's first talk about this costume styling. The most iconic features of Chrome ten years later are her single eye patch with metal decoration and long purple hair. When trimming the wig, I purposely kept that small tied-up hair bun on top of the head; to make it look more natural, I carefully styled it with hairspray. The costume is a white strapless slim-fitting long dress, with the neckline spliced with black lace edging and embellished with some dark red gemstones. To recreate the slit design on the side of the skirt hem, I chose a material with a certain drape yet not too soft, so that when walking or standing high on the stairs, the presentation of the leg lines would be very smooth and natural. Accessories are also an indispensable soul: once the black multi-layered choker and long gloves are put on, that dark gothic atmospheric feel instantly emerges, paired with black high heels, creating an extremely strong visual unity.
The shooting location was chosen in a European-style building with a duplex spiral staircase and high-ceilinged arch design. The iron railings here and the huge crystal chandelier hanging in the atrium particularly match that classical, slightly oppressive yet gorgeous worldview of ten years later. To echo the tension of the plot, I brought along a partner cosplaying a male character, who wore a black-and-red leather long trench coat and held that iconic silver cross long spear prop. The height difference when the two stood together happened to create that sense of fateful back-to-back stance in battle.
During the shoot, we tried various different perspectives. Using a tilted overhead camera position could amplify the oppression brought by the environment, making the frame more tense; while using symmetrical composition in the corridor, framing the two respectively in the arched balconies looking across at each other, that sense of fragmentation and storytelling instantly came out. My favorite is a half-body close-up shot captured under weak candlelight; instead of using conventional flat lighting, only a warm-toned light was used for side-lighting, with the candle flame reflecting in the eyes, instantly nailing that mysterious yet slightly dangerous atmosphere.
Regarding cosplaying Chrome, from every button of the clothing and the pattern direction of the lace, to the prop's weight distribution and weathering treatment, every single link needed to be repeatedly scrutinized against the original design. Although the world ten years later is full of cruel battles, that firm willpower to protect companions is what touches me most about this character. I hope that through this set of photos, everyone can feel Chrome's unique aloofness and resilience.
