[Columbina Cosplay] Dancing Under the Moonlit Seashore, Practicing for Marionette Sandrone

This shoot took place at the beach after sunset, right before the sky turned completely dark, leaving only a rich, dark red glow on the horizon. As mentioned in my earlier note about my little preparation, I specifically practiced dancing to better present the character this time. Although it was just some basic extensions and spins, paired with the character's unique gentle and ethereal vibe, it still took a lot of effort to catch that dynamic moment in front of the lens.

Regarding the outfit and wig styling, I spent a lot of thought on accurate recreation. The white geometric hollow-out blindfold is the core essence of the whole look, carrying both a ritualistic feel and a sacred purity that forbids desecration. To prevent it from falling off in the heavy beach winds, a relatively strong adhesive method was used inside. The wig has a black base color with bright magenta/peach-pink highlights on both sides, and it was specially braided into loop-shaped buns tied crosswise with white ribbons, creating a strong sense of layering. The white feather-like hair accessory on the back of the head fluttered slightly with the sea breeze; when in motion, the character's full ethereal aura came right through.

The upper body garment utilizes a patchwork design. For the black sections, I selected a leather-textured fabric with a reflective effect, paired with the red fabric of the hem, to avoid looking too dark against the deep beach background; instead, it showcases alternating light and dark texture details under the flash. Speaking of the shooting environment, this was absolutely a battle against nature. The beach at night was incredibly windy, light was extremely dim, and the red sunset glow vanished in the blink of an eye. In order to obtain a sufficiently good depth of field and lighting on the character's contours, we used powerful outdoor flash units. The flash hit the subject directly, and combined with the narrowing natural light at twilight, it made the character look exceptionally prominent in the frame. This high-contrast lighting heavily tests the wig and facial makeup; once the hairstyle gets messy or the expression isn't relaxed enough, it ends up looking rigid.

Practicing dancing wasn't just for the sense of motion in the photos, but also an extension of my understanding of this character. She drifts on the edges of the organization, holding immense curiosity toward everything, including the 'Marionette' she mentioned. While shooting this series, her characteristic half-smiling expression kept looping in my mind. Therefore, whether lightly tracing the air with my hand or tilting my head slightly to feel the sea breeze, I tried my best to let my body follow that unconstrained yet slightly detached rhythm. Compared to static portraits, I actually prefer capturing moments in motion. In the photos, the long white streamers fly through the air; that wasn't a pose held for a long time, but rather a frozen instance of the wind blowing up or the end of a spin. Although it took many retakes to capture this instant, and my legs got covered in sand and mud, seeing that outspread posture in the raw photos made all the prior trouble feel completely worth it.

In fact, the greatest difficulty in cosplaying this character lies in displaying her 'godless' or 'blind' state. After putting on the blindfold, my vision was blocked, and I initially felt a bit insecure walking around and posing, but that was also the beginning of entering the character's state. When you cover your eyes, your other senses magnify—the sound of the seawater flowing by your ears, the touch of the wind brushing past your hair strands and feathers all become clearer. Therefore, those moments of looking up at the sky in the photos weren't about staring at anything specific, but rather experiencing the surrounding environment in a different way. I really love the clashing effect of the black and red-pink palettes in the dim lighting environment this time. I initially thought these colors would get swallowed up in the deep tones of the seashore at dusk, but in reality, because of the powerful flash and appropriate exposure combination, the tough texture of the black leather and the smoothness of the hair strands formed a wonderful contrast. This combination of rigidity and softness, brightness and darkness, perfectly fits the understanding of this character in my heart.

This time, not only to be able to 'sing at the Marionette's doorstep,' but also to match the dynamic conceptualization of the photos, I specifically practiced these dance steps. Looking at the final result, I feel it is at least worthy of the two hours I spent freezing in the cold beach wind. What's recorded in the images is the beach wind, the final remnants of the setting sun, and the imprint I left as this character in this exact split second. Every cosplay is a dialogue crossing the dimensional wall, and this dialogue with the sea breeze and twilight was exceptionally quiet yet full of power. I hope this set of images can convey the atmosphere of that night. Although the beach wind at night was freezing cold and my legs got a lot of bug bites, these hardships felt trivial because of this passion. Let's draw a full stop to this attempt right here in the twilight.
