Taking advantage of the fine weekend weather, I headed out for a shoot with this Smoke of Partings outfit. Ever since I first saw the concept art for this skin, I absolutely loved these traditional Chinese ink-blending elements. The heavily crafted blue-and-white gradient skirt hem and the intricately styled chignon can truly strike a very different spark when placed in a real location. The location chosen this time is an ancient architectural courtyard with a sense of history. The water surface just barely covered the lowest step, and the dense inscriptions on the stone tablet behind me, combined with the dark texture of the courtyard's weathered wood, perfectly balanced the gorgeousness of the original game design, adding a grounded sense of narrative to the overall frame. Sunlight pierced through the leaves onto my body, while the reflection on the water and the shadows of the trees formed a natural framing for the composition.
Regarding the makeup, to match the cool and aloof setting of this skin, I intentionally lowered the lines of my eyebrows and eyes, and chose a matte red lip color to echo the white top and dark gray hair strands. The most important thing to watch out for during the shoot was the coordination between my posture and the skirt hem; although the large flared skirt looks beautiful visually, it is physically very heavy, requiring me to adjust my center of gravity with every turn. In terms of movement design, besides standing still, I also specifically experimented with some poses featuring high dynamic tension. For instance, in the shot selected as the cover for the final set, the freeze-frame of the raised leg paired with the direction of the fan, along with the natural arc of the skirt flying up from the movement and the ribbons on both sides, firmly captured that decisive yet lightweight aura of "Smoke of Partings." The preparation of props was also quite a major project. To accurately recreate the setting, the texture of the umbrella surface and weapons was brought as close as possible to the in-game model, and I practiced the gripping methods several times.
With this set of photos, I wanted to use the lens to transform this courtyard into a corner of Chang'an in the King's Rift as much as possible. Although shooting on location is subject to many uncontrollable factors like weather and lighting, seeing that the raw photos had already achieved the intended artistic mood made all the exhaustion from the process vanish instantly. Each of the works shared this time contains different emotional details, recording the Smoke of Partings under varying lights and shadows through this beautiful session of cosplay photography.
