"Hidden moon in grotto-heavens, the azure dragon cleanses the world." The finished photo set for this Imbibitor Lunae cosplay is finally organized. During those days in the Shackling Prison, only books could offer an escape from endless time and the shadows of the past; this time, I chose to materialize those stories hidden within the years through the camera lens.
Deciding to cosplay Imbibitor Lunae from Honkai: Star Rail was largely inspired by his restrained composure harboring an internal tempest. During preparations, the core of the styling was this long black hair with its iconic streak of crimson highlights. To recreate the sharp, defined hair texture from the illustrations, styling and trimming the wig took immense effort—especially the frontal layers, which needed to avoid obstructing the eyes while projecting a sharp, piercing presence. For the Dragon horn styling atop my head with its teal-blue gradient, we selected lightweight and easily sculptable materials accented with gold tips; adjusting them to the right angle immediately elevated the character's majestic spirit in this Chinese-style fantasy cosplay.
I particularly love the costume's design. The palette of white, cyan, and teal-blue, layered with expansive fish scale and water ripple motifs, evokes a rich mythical aura of Eastern fantasy. The asymmetrical one-shoulder cut paired with metallic bracers and a belt prevents the silhouette from looking dull. Prior to the shoot, the photographer and I meticulously planned around different props. The first scene was a classic weapon display: lowering my center of gravity while holding the cyan spear, dropping into a single-leg crouch to fully extend the robe hems and sleeves, evoking palpable battle-ready tension. The intricate textures on the spear shaft and the red tassel around my hand added striking chromatic contrast.
I also love the tranquil ambiance of the shots featuring the scroll and transverse flute. Against a traditional Chinese backdrop adorned with calligraphy scrolls under warm, soft golden lighting, the character's distant demeanor dissolves, revealing his gentle inner depth. When holding the book, I focused my gaze intently, as if genuinely lost in reading. For the flute series, I referenced classical postures for playing the transverse flute—holding it steadily while letting my gaze convey an aloof yet serene detachment through the lens.
Beyond costume and props, makeup and expressive gaze capture were vital to this Cosplay photography session. Pairing blue contact lenses with a clean base makeup, I elongated the eye shape with eyeliner without overusing vibrant colors to nail that cool, profound gaze. Under the conceptual Shackling Prison set, scenes with iron chains highlighted a composed ease despite confinement. The dark environment combined with side-backlighting beautifully sculpted skin texture and the gilded trims of the garments.
As a female cosplayer portraying a male character, I paid special attention to posture, emphasizing strength in the shoulders and neck. Beyond engaging my core, slightly dropping the shoulders and squaring the chest helped simulate a broader masculine frame. While male roles demand careful body management from female cosplayers, the tailored structure of Imbibitor Lunae's costume possesses great inherent tension—accentuating strengths and focusing visual attention above the neck, while the drape of the fabric created a comfortable, balanced overall silhouette.
Cosplay is never just about wearing clothes for photos; deeply understanding character lore and refining costume and prop details fosters a profound connection with the role. I am thrilled to recreate these moments of Dan Heng · Imbibitor Lunae, and through the lens, to have stepped briefly into that world steeped in azure dragon lore and ancient legends.
