This time I am bringing a photoshoot of Makima from Chainsaw Man. The classic black, white, and red color scheme—red hair, white shirt, black tie, and black suit coat—is something I've been familiar with many times before, but when it actually came to the on-site shooting, there were still many details that needed to be ironed out. First is the wig; to restore Makima's iconic layered bangs and the small braided pigtails hanging on both sides, I repeatedly adjusted the direction of the hair strands during the makeup trial. Under intense light, that slightly orange-toned red looks exceptionally eye-catching. Then there is the tailoring of the clothing: the collar of the white shirt must be kept clean and crisp, the knot of the black tie must be tied tightly and neatly, and the long black coat provides an excellent darkening effect, making the whole character look steady and weighted in the frame.

The venue for this shoot was a geometric concrete building in downtown Guangzhou, making it a perfect spot for a Guangzhou photography booking. The photographer @Scophen chose fair-faced concrete pillars and curved stairs as the background; these cold, hard architectural lines are a perfect match for the character's external black-and-white tones. In terms of lighting, we extensively used a combination of top light and side-backlight. You can see in the cover photo with the "shushing" gesture that the sunlight hit the hair from diagonally above. That rim lighting completely separated the red hair styling from the dark background, with very saturated colors, creating a mysterious and unquestionable sense of oppression. A black long-handled umbrella was also used as a prop during the shoot; besides shading, the curved lines of the umbrella also neutralized the stiffness of the architecture, adding a bit of storytelling to the composition.

We actually experienced some minor setbacks during the shoot because the transition area between shadows and highlights in the scene was vast. To capture that clean silhouette light, we had to constantly adjust our positioning and turning angles. To maintain the character's calm, in-control demeanor, I experimented with various micro-expressions, trying to avoid over-exaggerated ferocity while breaking away from pure sweetness and cuteness, leaning more toward a sense of detachment that is indifferent to the surroundings. During post-processing, we retained a large amount of shadow details while enhancing the sharpness of the highlights, without using heavy skin-smoothing filters to preserve the texture of the skin. The red hair is indeed very conspicuous against the cool-toned background, and the final image presents this atmosphere that is both chilly and powerful.

This Cosplay photography project took a lot of time from planning to the final output, but the moment I saw the finished product, I felt all the effort was worth it. Finding visual symbols in real-world scenes that resonate with the character and transforming two-dimensional settings into concrete photographic works is a very interesting thing in itself.
