The Convention photos from the Chongqing Dreamland Comic Exhibition are finally organized, so I'm here to share my shooting and retouching reflections for this Demon Rem cosplay. Portraying Demon Rem from Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-, this version adds prominent battle-damage weathering compared to the standard maid dress, delivering a much darker and sharper presence. For makeup, an ultra-fair foundation shade was used to capture blood-loss pallor, focusing heavily on realistic scars across the cheeks and mouth corners created by blending fake blood with eyeshadow. Leaving a slightly glossy, moist sheen upon drying added authentic texture under photographic lighting. The light blue wig paired with the glowing pink-purple horn on the forehead pushed the non-human chill to the maximum.
The costume is a custom black-and-white maid dress with intricate lace layering across the neckline, cuffs, and skirt, requiring careful arranging when worn to keep lines neat. Paired with White stockings and black platform shoes, this combination visually elongated leg lines while delivering stunning visual impact in single-knee kneeling or side profile poses. The spiked flail prop was genuinely heavy; holding it aloft on-site to maintain dynamic poses left my arms sore, and retaking the kneeling pose multiple times made my knees ache.
The convention hall was crowded, making finding clean camera angles a true challenge. Fortunately, my photographer friends did an amazing job using wide apertures to blur distracting backgrounds while capturing top-down lighting to sculpt abyss-like shadows. Once receiving the raw files, I began extensive post-production retouching to correct color shifts caused by venue lighting. I crushed the background exposure, softened frontal lighting on the subject, and specifically refined the sheen on the White stockings and garment folds, adding fine film grain to elevate atmospheric depth. Seeing the concept transform into real visuals brings an irreplaceable sense of fulfillment. Though the prep and shoot were exhausting, sharing a beloved character with fellow fans makes it truly meaningful. The venue at Chongqing was massive with thoughtful lighting from the organizers; looking back at the retouched photos, every bit of hard work was worth it. Given the chance, I look forward to exploring more characters and darker cosplay styles in the future.
