This photoshoot took place outdoors in wonderful weather, utilizing white wooden trellises and pink roses as the primary backdrop. The structure of the flower stand added rich layers to the photos, and paired with the bright sunlight, gave the overall image a very luminous, transparent feel in this Flower stand photoshoot.
Looking at the costume, I chose a blue-and-white plaid off-the-shoulder top adorned with generous white lace frills, paired with a fluffy tiered tulle skirt for the lower half, leaning toward a lightweight and fairy-tale aesthetic. The wig was a soft pale pink, trimmed neatly, and the white ruffled hat atop my head served as the finishing touch, echoing the fabric textures of the outfit nicely.
For props, the thick yellow-and-green braided cord in my hand played a significant role in styling and visual leading lines, connecting to that prominent pink plush doll. The plush material softly reflected the sunlight; this interplay of textures kept the composition from being monotonous while adding interactivity to the overall styling.
The shooting process actually required quite some physical stamina. Under direct outdoor sunlight, wearing layers upon layers of skirts and heavy shoes, I had to maintain a seated posture constantly without crushing the volume of the skirt. Fortunately, photographer @桜井白 was fantastic at capturing candid moments, quickly freezing the light and shadow cascading across my body through the floral leaves without letting the composition feel stiff.
As for the makeup, I adopted a minimalist approach. Avoiding overly heavy, dramatic makeup, the focus was placed on a clear foundation and natural lip color to preserve a youthful, delicate girliness. Since the character designs in the Touhou Project series are inherently recognizable, combined with the Subterranean Animism setting, I wanted to present a relaxed, everyday state while remaining instantly identifiable.
When preparing a character's wardrobe, I habitually delve into their background lore first. For example, in Komeiji Satori cosplay, while she typically resides deep underground in the dark Subterranean Animism, this project was conceived around the idea of "what if Satori-sama appeared in a completely different, sunlit environment?" The white wooden trellis and wall full of pink roses were an exploration of this contrast. The way the tulle skirt fluttered in the breeze was wonderful to capture, though aligning it with the curve of the braided cord often required several repositioning adjustments.
In post-processing, we mainly preserved the ample natural sunlight to keep a crisp contrast between light and dark, while deepening the lush green of the background foliage to make the pink-and-blue subject stand out even more. Overall, from hair, makeup, props, and setting to photographic coordination, everything went smoothly—a very satisfying creative attempt. Daylight shifts rapidly, but thankfully we finished most of the shooting during the optimal golden window.
Let's talk about the footwear. For this shoot, I specially selected plush-textured platform round-toe shoes paired with white socks and yellow fuzzy pompoms at the ankles in a cute White thigh-highs outfit / sock styling. The thick soles were practical for outdoor standing and long sitting sessions, while the plush texture looked soft in the sunlight and helped balance the lower body's visual weight.
We utilized several camera angles: higher angles looking down to frame the flower stand structure, and low-angle tilted shots to incorporate the blue sky and white clouds as a backdrop. I was also very pleased with the seated composition; naturally dangling legs elongated the visual proportions, and the white socks and shoes nicely complemented the layers of the skirt hem.
Overall, from initial concept to final photos, despite a few hiccups with location scouting, the final result was truly eye-catching. Touhou Project has a fantastic fanbase; when cosplaying such characters, finding the balance between capturing their true essence and infusing your own innovation into the styling and atmosphere is challenging. I feel this Komeiji Satori cosplay look managed to achieve that delicate balance.
