[Flandre Scarlet Cosplay] Red and White Dress for Christmas in Touhou Project, Full Winter Vibe

Shooting this long-planned Christmas edition Red and white dress took a lot of thought from makeup to set styling. Inspired by her iconic spell card traits, I chose a red and white color scheme to craft this Lolita-style dress. The skirt layers are extensively built up—stitching inner white frilled ruffles with outer red satin, accented with bows at the chest and waist to immediately grab visual focus.

The trickiest element this time was the black metallic frame behind my back and its colorful prism ornaments. To restore that iconic visual motif, the curve of the metal frame required repeated micro-adjustments so it wouldn't collide awkwardly with wings or skirt layers when worn. Rather than traditional paper or acrylic crystals which might lack reflectivity, I specifically sourced transparent materials coated with iridescent laser film, which refract vivid rainbow shimmers with even the slightest light.

For makeup and styling, to complement the blonde curly hair and red eyes, I kept the base makeup impeccably clean and used low-saturation earth-tone eyeshadows to emphasize eye contours, keeping my gaze sharply focused.

Regarding set decoration, I selected a cozy space with vintage wooden accents. A classic dark brown piano served as the background, grounding the rich color palette without cluttering the frame. Nearby sat a small Christmas tree wrapped in silver ribbon, bathed in soft winter light streaming through the window to set a warm tonal baseline. Paired with the teddy bear in hand and fluffy white bedsheets, this cozy fairytale setting feels far more vivid and alive than a plain studio backdrop.

Lighting and camera angles were equally crucial during filming. The photographer utilized diffuse natural sunlight from the window as the primary light source across my face and gown, creating a soft texture and eliminating harsh shadows.

The garment holds countless details: lace trimming at the cuffs and a neckline cut that gracefully reveals collarbone and shoulder lines at specific angles, flowing smoothly into white lace socks and vintage brown Mary Jane shoes. This seamless silhouette owes much to thorough wig styling beforehand—the direction and airy volume of the hair were carefully sculpted to support this fluffy, voluminous hairstyle.

Bringing such a distinct anime character into reality is the ultimate test of character interpretation and balancing costume, makeup, and props. It cannot be so overly complex that it loses everyday aesthetic appeal, nor too plain that it lacks character identity. The tailoring of this dress sets high demands on body silhouette, requiring precise adjustments to waistline and skirt length proportions.

Cozy home nooks offer so many creative corners to explore—like the bed featuring a carved wooden headboard or botanical wall art. Without such diverse set design, shots would risk feeling flat and repetitive.

Shooting this outfit during summer would be stiflingly warm, so luckily we timed it for the winter season. Incorporating Christmas themed photography elements naturally infuses holiday vibes into the frame without needing extra lighting FX. As accessories dangle from the wing frame, swaying gently when I walk or turn, they capture charming dynamic motion on camera.

Finally, regarding lens selection, mid and medium close-up shots proved best for highlighting garment construction—capturing upper body layering and wing frame architecture while leaving negative space for background elements like the Christmas tree and piano.
