Documenting this shoot, besides the immersive interpretation of the characters, what made it even more enjoyable was presenting that tacit understanding with my partner in front of the lens. Giving lover-like care in the name of best friendsāthis subtle emotional boundary is actually perfect for the interaction state of these two characters in their storyline, being neither too overbearing nor full of gentle protectiveness.
The collaboration with Qiyu this time was incredibly smooth. Let's start with the makeup and styling: Herta cosplay's wide-brimmed purple hat is the visual centerpiece, with its blend of velvet and satin textures showcasing a beautiful sheen under the side-backlight. The silver-gray wig paired with red-toned blended eye makeup was chosen to replicate that mysterious, slightly tsundere, and aloof demeanor. Meanwhile, Qiyu's Ruan Mei cosplay styling offered a completely different flavor: a color-blocked lake blue and white gown paired with short straight black hair, adorned with white flowers on the side to make the whole look gentle and agile. The pearl necklace and blue leather gloves are highly recognizable details. While costumes in a duo cosplay can easily clash in terms of colors, the warm-versus-cool contrast between the purple and lake blue actually formed an interesting sense of balance in the frame.
For the venue selection, we specially picked this study with vintage lattice windows, where deep brown wooden bookshelves and a weathered leather sofa evoked a sense of classical serenity. During the shoot, the photographer focused on utilizing the natural light around 4 PM, which filtered through the window frames to leave crisp geometric shadows on the floor. Take the cover photo for example: I stood behind her with both hands resting on her shoulders; to maintain a stable frame and a natural flow in our gaze, we controlled our breathing when freezing the pose to avoid any head wobbling. The leather reflection of the gloves and the thin gauze folds of the collar were also details we repeatedly emphasized when reviewing the photos together afterwards. The most crucial element in a duo cosplay is not each person shining individually, but the fusion of their auras. When exchanging glances and making physical contact, we tried our best to find that relaxed sense of a "soul connection," which is exactly why this set makes people feel that besides the visual accuracy, the emotions are also completely on point.
"Becoming the tomorrow of yesterday, those with connected souls meet and become eternal." This shoot left behind not just a few frozen frames of work, but also our experience of standing shoulder-to-shoulder in this fictional universe. To me, touching the character's inner soul through cosplay and presenting it together with my partner in our own way is the core joy of Anime-style photography and character roleplay creation.
