[Sparkle cosplay] Honkai: Star Rail, sparks shining under the Aeon of Elation

This time, I shot a set of Sparkle cosplay from Honkai: Star Rail. To showcase the traits of two different styles, I specially designed two looks: a classic red-and-black style and a playful fairy-tale style.

The pre-production prep span for both looks was quite extensive. For the first classic red look, the main goal was to convey the character's confident yet relaxed temperament. To make the wig styling fit the official splash art even better, the angles of the red twin-tail bows were carefully adjusted during tying, pairing with wispy bangs on both sides of the forehead and the small red mole under the eye to recreate her unique eye makeup through fine details. For the costume, the off-the-shoulder Japanese-style top in red, black, and gold, combined with the blue-and-gold rope knots and pendants at the waist, delivered rich colors and visual layering. During the shoot, we selected a folding screen with large peony flower patterns as the backdrop, complemented by red maple leaves beside it and an oiled-paper umbrella in the corner, projecting warm yellow light from the front-side angle to create a cozy yet dramatically tense atmosphere. Sitting on a wooden platform wearing black leather gloves with hands loosely clenched into fists showcased a playful, lively stance.

The second look, featuring white hair and rabbit ears, took on a completely different fairy-tale circus style. To highlight the contrast in the image, props like playing cards, chess pieces, a gorgeous crystal chandelier, and a tall metal birdcage were used, with a black-and-white checkered floor covering the ground. The white hair paired with a black-and-white rabbit-ear headpiece, alongside light pink contact lenses and eye makeup, gave the character a more animated yet innocent look. The brightly colored, exaggerated prop staff in hand became the visual centerpiece; to complement this prop, we adopted a high-angle top-down shot with the body leaning forward in a half-squat, which, combined with playing cards scattered across the frame, enhanced that lively yet slightly aggressive feel the character has in the game.

In truth, when doing Anime cosplay for this character, the biggest difficulty isn't entirely the costume or props, but how to express the character's sense of Elation and cynical playfulness whether wearing a mask or revealing facial expressions following the Path of Elation. In the first look, one needs to show an unhurried composure as if ready to stir up trouble at any moment; in the second look, stronger body language is needed to match the impactful prop. During the shoot, we also experimented with several light sources—for instance, top lighting combined with the chandelier created strong shadow contrast, recreating that magical stage lighting feel typical of Anime cosplay.

Regarding fabric choices, attention was paid to real-world reflections and textures under shooting conditions. The sheer sleeves and sash fabric texture in the first look appeared sleek and smooth under warm light, while the ruffles and white puffy skirt in the second look demonstrated strong three-dimensional depth under hard light. Black leather gloves spanned both looks, adding a grounded sense of realism to the images.

Every time during studio Cosplay photography, the happiest part is watching different props, lighting, and set arrangements gradually transform through the lens into what was envisioned in mind. The character Sparkle inherently possesses an elusive theatrical feel, so in makeup and expression, I was careful to capture that gaze hovering right on the boundary between earnestness and teasing. For example, in the first look, slightly raising the chin or deliberately glancing toward the camera brought out that signature confidence.

Overall, the two looks and set designs this time both strove to fit her unpredictable, playful, and Elation-aligned qualities following the Path of Elation. From tweaking wispy wig strands to securing the collar choker and coordinating poses with props, every detail demanded accuracy. I hope this photo set showcases the multi-faceted charm of this character; I will continue refining my hair/makeup and expressive range moving forward to bring everyone more high-fidelity works.
