This CP30 convention was truly an exhilarating experience. To faithfully bring Firefly to life, I poured a lot of thought into the costume and props beforehand. As you can see in the photos, this outfit features rich, intricate layers; the gold trimming on the black coat and the gem accessories on the chest required careful styling. For the inner white blouse, I deliberately picked a structured, crisp fabric so it wouldn't look bulky when layered beneath the capelet. The gradient blue skirt fabric was the absolute highlight—it cast a subtle shimmer under convention hall lighting with gorgeous movement in motion, looking fantastic on camera. The wig was also styled multiple times in advance; the ahoge atop the crown was locked down with hairspray so it wouldn't droop or frizz from the crowds and walking. Luckily, it held up beautifully, and I'm thrilled with how the turquoise gradient tips turned out.
For makeup, the main goal was to highlight her cool, gentle detachment and serene composure. To match the color palette, I chose violet-blue colored contacts and kept the eyeshadow in cool tones, deepening the outer corners while adding a delicate rosy flush along the lower lash line to keep my gaze sharp and focused. Going slightly heavier on eye makeup ensured the camera flash wouldn't wash out the details. When doing touch-ups on site, beyond blotting oil and reapplying powder, my main priority was smoothing down the wig's side locks, especially since over-the-shoulder poses easily tussle the hair.
I chose this outfit because despite its complexity, the details are captivating—like the ruffled cuffs, which add an airy delicacy with just a slight tilt of the angle. While shooting on the convention floor, we sought out different lighting angles to escape the crowds. Since Firefly is somewhat introverted, I kept my expressions restrained rather than dramatic, maintaining a gentle smile with a calm, tender gaze. Facing the lens, slight side angles and subtle downward tilts worked best. The photographer had a brilliant eye for light and shadow, capturing the exact vision we aimed for. The first over-the-shoulder shot was a spontaneous snapshot, yet the framing came out impeccably—revealing the back tailoring of the coat while showcasing the leg lines. These dark Stockings were an essential styling component, accentuating and elongating the legs.
The ambient hall lighting was relatively dim, and the '7A' sign in the backdrop created a fitting cyberpunk mood. Dark leggings paired with white shoes further lengthened the silhouette. To keep the garment pristine and wrinkle-free, I avoided exaggerated movements on the floor, treading carefully wherever I walked to keep from snagging the gold trims or soiling the hemline. I received so many heartwarming Firefly fan-made freebies from fellow fans—everyone put so much care into them, and holding them felt deeply moving. The convention atmosphere was wonderfully welcoming and full of love. All the pre-con preparation felt entirely rewarded seeing these finished edits. Gathering together at CP30 over our shared love for the same character was pure happiness. I can't wait to return to the next convention in even better form!
