Bringing Hwah Jah's outfit from the initial concept art to the final fitting required numerous rounds of detailed adjustments. To align with the theme of the 2026 Port District Midsummer Cooling Festival while retaining the character's signature graceful, lacquer-like radiance, I dedicated deep care to the fabric textures and styling.
Beginning with the core dress, the emerald base utilizes lustrous satin fabric that reflects gorgeous watery ripples under the strobes. To stay faithful to the in-game art, a white sheer wide-sleeved shawl was draped on top, ensuring fluid drape and ethereal fluttering in motion. The most demanding challenge, however, lay in the golden ornaments across the waist and abdomen: the crescent moons, petals, and sapphire elements were all affixed by hand piece by piece. Wearing them demanded meticulous alignment, as even a minor displacement would shift the overall visual balance. The geometric black-and-gold choker around my neck was just as demanding, requiring a snug fit to prevent shifting mid-shoot and disrupting the final frames.
Styling the wig was another pivotal focus. Creating the short bob with blunt bangs—complete with her signature black ahoge and the white streak highlighted on the left—took repeated cutting and setting sessions. To complement the anime aesthetic, the eye makeup leaned into soft pink blending, infusing a hint of playful cuteness and spirit.
The shooting environment was a bamboo grove and traditional wooden setting that I adore. The lighting ratio was kept deliberately soft, and an illuminated circular frame in the background served as a gorgeous backlight, giving the entire atmosphere an airy, translucent glow. To accentuate the tailoring of the dress, I explored elongated seated and leaning postures. Because the lower hem features a high side slit, I paired it with sheer nude stockings and black block-heeled pumps to guard against wardrobe slips while elongating leg lines. The heels, accented with gold details and red soles, echoed the overarching color palette seamlessly.
During the folding fan shots, because the background was a relatively dim authentic studio set, I had to work closely with the warm ambient lights to control the angle of light falling across my face, all while keeping my hands curved in an elegant arc. Counterbalancing the fan's physical weight and the drape of the tassels with finger tension ensured the movements looked natural and effortless. The entire shoot felt like turning 2D artwork into tangible reality step by step. Every costume touch-up and posture adjustment served to make the final visual that much more compelling.
The final selects exceeded my expectations: the garment textures shone vividly on camera, and the subject harmonized seamlessly with the surroundings. Recreating an in-game character through authentic tactile fabrics, light, and shadow is truly an exhilarating journey in itself.
