This time shooting Saigyouji Yuyuko, I chose a nightscape scene hung with Japanese style lanterns. As I am the one appearing in front of the camera, I wanted to share some behind-the-scenes details of this photo set with everyone.
In terms of costume, this outfit adopts a blue-and-white Lolita dress style, featuring multi-layered lace and ruffles stacked together, while the corset belt and ribbon bindings on the cuffs add a strong sense of layering. The headdress is a key highlight; decorations of blue roses and small white flowers paired with translucent tulle create an exceptionally textured look during close-ups. To faithfully recreate the character's short pink hair, I wore a pink wig styled with curls. The makeup intensified the under-eye blush and eyeshadow, paired with pink contact lenses.
The prop is a purplish-red folding fan, which provides a striking contrast against the blue-and-white costume, enriching hand movements whether held in hand or opened up during photos.
The shooting environment is an interior space featuring wooden latticed doors, windows, and stone walls, adorned with numerous warm-yellow lanterns. The black calligraphy on the lanterns and the mahogany stands create a wonderful ambiance. To balance the warm light of the lanterns, the photographer added a slightly cooler fill light from the front, allowing the cool tones of the costume and the warm tones of the background to create distinct layers. Lighting for night photography is crucial; it requires avoiding strange shadows on the face while ensuring the face isn't overexposed due to overly bright lanterns.
Regarding pose guidance, I tried postures such as gently stroking a lantern, turning my body to look back at the lens, and lifting one leg while waving the fan. When moving around in this costume, the lace and ribbons on the skirt hem flutter along, making candid action shots much more vibrant than stationary poses. Because the outfit is relatively heavy and the headpiece is not light, frequent adjustments to the hairstyle and skirt hem were necessary during the shoot to maintain the most flattering pleated state. I hope these details prove helpful to anyone planning to shoot a similar style of cosplay in the future.
