The preparation cycle for this Qingxiao shoot from Wuthering Waves was actually quite long; from receiving the costume to final makeup styling, many details were adjusted along the way. Qingxiao's costume might look light and sheer at first glance, but it actually has numerous layers. The white sheer shawl paired with the blue-and-gold cloud-and-water pattern embroidery on her body delivers a deeply ethereal visual effect, but wearing it required considerable effort just to secure these flowing gauze drapes. The wig was also specially styled, with the flipped tips on both sides and blue hair accessories needing careful styling with hairspray to ensure that natter of agile feel is maintained no matter how one moves before the lens.
In terms of makeup, to lean closer to the character's 2D anime feel, the base makeup was applied with high translucency, while the eye makeup utilized an orange-red toned gradient blending matched with blue circle lenses, looking exceptionally special within a setting featuring strong cool-and-warm color contrast. The venue setup by Tuntun Photography Club truly deserves a major shoutout. The combination of red-and-orange maple forests and Chinese classical carved wooden beds and screens, coupled with that giant full moon background, completely maximized the Chinese-style fantasy atmosphere.
Regarding pose interpretation, this time I experimented with numerous different postures. Qingxiao's long strip of blue weapon in her hand is my favorite prop, featuring a semi-transparent wave texture with great texture. Standing with the sword required expressing a sense of aloofness and vigilance; whereas reclining sideways on the couch showcased more of a lazy and composed vibe, utilizing the coordination of Stockings and camera angles to elongate the full-body lines. Many friends ask how to capture great full-body photos; actually, the secret lies in utilizing the furniture within the environment, such as leaning sideways against the daybed with legs extending naturally, which not only gives the composition a diagonal extension feel but also brilliantly displays the costume's details.
During the shoot, I was constantly mindful of the gauze drapes' movement because any breeze or slight motion would cause the sheer fabric to stick to the body or block the face. To capture that absolute peak moment when the gauze drapes fluttered open, the photographer pressed the shutter consecutively many times. Accompanied by red maples and moonlight, this photo set's color saturation is extremely high, with post-processing keeping only basic contrast and tone unification to preserve that rich cool-and-warm contrasting ambiance of the original shots.
The shooting theme this time was the combination of Chinese style and fantasy. To match the red maple leaves, I also put some effort into facial expression management. Qingxiao is not an overly extroverted character; her gaze needs to carry a hint of detachment yet deep concentration. Therefore, in close-up shots, I tried my best to tuck my chin slightly, fix my gaze on the lens, and pair it with finger movements—such as the lively instant of a V-sign or the gesture of lightly touching an earring—to make the whole persona look more playful. As for the shots lying on the couch, to emphasize body proportions, I pointed my toes slightly to make the leg lines flow smoother. The design combining Stockings with a short skirt actually imposes many movement restrictions, especially when moving around on such classical furniture, requiring constant vigilance against wardrobe malfunctions; thus, many gorgeous poses were trialed and adjusted angle by angle with the help of the photographer and assistant. The venue's lighting was relatively dim, but the fill light hitting my body had to be pristine so the white-and-blue alternating outfit wouldn't lose its color fidelity. Looking across the entire photo set, the passionate warmth of the red maples and Qingxiao's cool tones formed a striking contrast, which is also my favorite aspect of this photo set. Every time I cosplay, from studying the original artwork's expressions to bringing the costume to life in the 3D world, the entire process is tiring yet deeply fulfilling.
