I actually shot this New Jersey dorm skin set a while ago, and taking advantage of the weekend to sort through the photos, I'd like to share some personal thoughts and tips from this Home photography session.
First off is the accuracy of the costume and styling for this Anime cosplay. The long straight blue hair paired with the bunny-ear headband is an iconic element; I specifically chose a vibrant bright blue wig with neatly trimmed bangs and slightly curled tips, allowing the hair to drape naturally without looking stiff when lying down or turning sideways. For the top, I chose a cropped white zip-up hoodie featuring two light blue plush heart patches on the cuffs as eye-catching accents, unifying the overall palette while enhancing the cute loungewear feel. The bottom is a pair of light blue shorts paired with over-the-knee Blue and white striped stockings, which visually elongate the leg lines while harmonizing perfectly with the character's maritime theme. My nails were also painted in a matching deep blue—pure satisfaction for detail-oriented fans!
The scenes were mainly divided into two areas: the bedroom and the kitchen. The bedroom's window blinds were the standout feature this time; natural light filtering through the slats created striped shadow patterns across the white bedsheets and striped pillows, crafting a soft and cozy "lazy afternoon" ambiance. The shots in the kitchen utilized the metallic reflections from the refrigerator and oven, where standing by the counter and glancing back added a touch of everyday lifestyle warmth. While the logo on the mirrored glass looked lovely, I specifically picked the bed shots for the cover because the framing is cleaner and the visual focus on the subject is more grounded.
For gear, we used the Canon EOS R6 Mark II paired with the RF 24-70mm and RF 35mm VCM lenses. The lightweight build and close-up capability of the RF 35mm VCM proved exceptionally handy in tight indoor spaces; for instance, in the shot where I'm lying on the bed resting my chin on my hands, a low angle combined with the 35mm wide-angle perspective created dynamic visual tension. When shooting full-body seated poses, switching to the 24-70mm zoomed to around 50mm avoided edge distortion while ensuring sufficient background blur. I manually set the white balance to around 5200K, giving the skin a subtly warm glow that contrasts cleanly against the cool-toned blue and white outfit for a more translucent look.
The posing was designed to capture the "just woke up in the dorm" state. Shading eyes from the light, leaning against pillows, casual hand gestures, and alternately lifting feet might seem effortless, but I deliberately adjusted my shoulder and waist positions in each shot to ensure the hoodie's cutouts and the striped stockings created pleasing geometric lines within the frame. In particular, for the side-lying cover photo, the naturally raised legs accentuated the layered spiral lines of the Blue and white striped stockings under the light, while propping my body with one arm conveyed both relaxation and New Jersey's signature lazy charm.
In post-processing, we avoided heavy retouching, focusing instead on fine-tuning highlights and white balance: pulling down the window blind highlights to retain fabric textures, slightly lifting shadows for clean skin tones, and adding a subtle soft-focus filter to simulate Japanese film aesthetics while preserving crisp sharpness in the hair and clothing. The goal was to convey an effortless "naturally cute without heavy dressing-up" daily vibe, which is what attracted me most to this New Jersey dorm skin from Azur Lane.
Shooting indoor Home photography really tests one's perception of light and shadow, as natural light shifts quickly from morning to afternoon, completely altering lighting angles and creating consistency challenges across a single set. For this series, I unified the color grading around clean blue and white tones to keep the palette pristine yet richly layered. I hope everyone can feel this cozy, relaxing slice of dorm life!
