The starting point for these convention photos was to recreate the cool, ice-and-snow aesthetic of the Oath Wedding Skin. From initial design and pattern making to the final material texture, this entire costume differs significantly from standard, off-the-shelf options.
Starting with the hair and makeup, silver-gray was chosen as the primary tone for the wig, paired with a blue-cyan gradient on the tips and inner layers. Under the studio lighting, this cool-toned gradient brings out exceptional texture. The crown on top is integrated with the cat ears; to ensure that the shifting veil wouldn't pull the headpiece off-center during the shoot, a strong invisible structure was implemented underneath. The silver hollowed-out details on the headpiece appear sleek from a distance, but closer inspection reveals intricate craftsmanship, which, paired with the white tulle veil, adds a delicate lightness to the overall look. The choker around the neck is embedded with a sapphire, visually tying into the overall ice-blue palette.
Moving on to the costume itself, the most labor-intensive part was the massive, puffy ice-blue sheer tulle skirt. It features an inner lace mini-skirt layer topped with an expansive, layered gradient tulle overlay. During the shoot, this lightweight fabric was highly sensitive to airflow; even a faint breeze or movement from passersby created fluid, wave-and-cloud-like dynamic flows in the skirt. The upper strapless top uses a textured silver metallic material with strong reflectivity, creating a striking contrast between soft and hard textures against the sheer skirt below. Matching semi-sheer silver velvet gloves visually elongate the arm lines while harmonizing the metallic highlights of the upper body. The silver high heels with blue bows caught the visual spotlight perfectly, especially in snapshots captured while balancing on one leg.
The venue was a large indoor exhibition center, where parallel industrial overhead spotlights combined with the dark, mirror-like reflective flooring provided a natural studio-like environment for this cool-toned look. The single-leg lift pose was actually quite challenging: the floor was relatively slick, and the heavy drag of the expansive skirt disrupted balance, requiring considerable core strength to stay steady while maintaining a natural expression. Out of dozens of discarded shots, only a few perfectly captured the full flare of the skirt and clear, layered light patterns cast onto the tulle.
For post-processing, I intentionally preserved the folds of the voluminous skirt and the authentic fabric textures, avoiding artificial sharpening or excessive skin smoothing. The floating white light specks were added later to match the cool and elegant aesthetic of the Oath Wedding Skin, kept restrained so as to soften the empty background without overshadowing the makeup or costume details. To emphasize the pose and dynamic tension of the gown, the subject was positioned centrally in the frame, integrating the floor reflections to extend the depth of the composition.
Bulky cosplay gowns like this require far more effort to pack, transport, and change into than regular outfits. On-site, extra care was needed to avoid tripping or knocking over others' equipment; fortunately, having enough space made the session quite efficient. Every photo session involving massive skirts is an exercise in coordinating with the environment, light, and the costume's physical characteristics. Achieving this cool yet romantic visual presence made all the laborious preparations worthwhile.
