Today at the Port Midsummer Cool Festival, I captured a set of event photos as Hwah Jah. The textiles and craftsmanship of this ensemble are exceptionally refined: the outer layer features sheer white bell sleeves draped over a halter-neck gown of pale sage silk, cinched at the waist with an ornate gilded crest centered by an eye-catching sapphire and cascading azure tassels. To complement the overall silhouette, I paired it with black stiletto heels trimmed with gold borders, holding a traditional Chinese round fan painted with flowering boughs.
The set design was crafted with immense thought, backed by an enormous circular illuminated lightbox and verdant stalks of lush bamboo, with wooden Chinese-style seating and a low tea table anchoring the foreground. This seamless union of classical Chinese motifs and modern tailoring yielded exquisite textural depth before the lens. In posing, I explored multiple seated postures. Because the skirt features a dramatic high slit, crossing my legs not only allowed the deep emerald drape to cascade organically across the frame, but also visually elongated the leg lines, enhancing the frame's compositional tension and grace. While heels inevitably induce fatigue after prolonged standing, they undeniably sculpted statuesque, elongated proportions.
For hair and makeup, to echo the sapphire at my waist and the serene, cool-toned palette, I wore vivid sky-blue contact lenses. The straight blunt-bang bob crowned with twin topknots gave the look a crisp, polished demeanor. During shooting, key lighting flooded in from the front and side, highlighting the lustrous silk sheen of the fabrics and the dewy translucence of my skin. I continuously micro-adjusted the round fan—holding it overhead, resting it against my collarbones, or angling it gracefully above my knees—using prop interactions to enrich the visual storytelling.
Surrounded by bamboo stalks and carved wooden furnishings, this naturally tranquil ambiance made slipping into character effortless. There was no need for exaggerated expressions; maintaining a serene, poised composure allowed me to blend organically into the environment. Winning the Manjuu luggage suitcase at the festival raffle was an unexpected stroke of luck, serving as the perfect punctuation to this demanding shoot. Though physically exhausting, seeing these rich, authentic textures captured on the monitor made every ounce of devotion worthwhile. Sustaining pure passion for the character and meticulously honoring every detail is what drives my creative journey.
