This New Jersey Garden cheongsam look from Azur Lane finally yielded satisfying results at the Guangzhou Firefly ACG Expo in July. Today, I'm sharing all the shooting insights and on-site experiences without reservation.
The overall costume adopts a deep blue and black primary palette, integrated with generous sheer tulle patchwork across the chest and torso alongside intricate gold beast-motif embroidery. Building on the traditional oriental qipao cut with numerous ACG-styled modifications—especially the sheer front panel—it greatly tested light and shadow control during the shoot.
For Anime-style photography, on-site lighting setup directly determines the final image texture. This shoot relied heavily on Jinbei and Sony gear: for the key light, I used a Jinbei HD250max fitted with an 80cm octabox. This combination delivered exceptionally even, soft frontal illumination, excelling at accurately capturing the wig's color gradation and skin translucency. For rim lighting, I boldly used a bare-bulb Jinbei HD100 flash. The purpose was clear: to intensify rim light along the character's silhouette, cleanly separating the blue hair contours and long floating ribbons from the backdrop to heighten three-dimensionality and subtle specular highlights.
In terms of posing, we explored various angles to maximize the strengths of this Garden cheongsam. A standing pose with an umbrella showcased the tailored upper bodice and cascading blue ribbons, while dynamic poses like the single-knee kneeling shot on the cover delivered strong visual impact, accentuating leg contours and the elegant allure of the Black tights outfit. Special praise goes to the chunky black lace-up heels, which transitioned seamlessly into the stockings to emphasize leg lines with high visual recognition. The long blue ribbons required careful coordination with arm movements, ensuring the lightweight fabric created a fluid sense of motion whether fluttering in the breeze or resting naturally on the floor.
Despite bustling crowds and cluttered ambient lighting at the Firefly ACG Expo venue, the photographer skillfully utilized reflections from the grey-blue floor as a solid base. Powered by the high-speed continuous shooting of the Sony A7 IV and the reliable synchronization of the Jinbei Q7III trigger, the subject stayed sharply locked even against a background softly blurred by a wide aperture. Straight-out-of-camera color rendition was stellar, presenting a cool marine palette that required only minor contrast tweaks in post-production.
When photographing translucent fabrics and black hosiery, we paid special attention to how light interacts with materials. Sheer tulle gains depth when front-lit and becomes ethereal when backlit, requiring exact angles for the side-rim light. The hard light from the bare Jinbei HD100 was spot-on, preserving image sharpness while tracing a luminous highlight along the subject's contours to keep skin and dark fabrics from blending together. From makeup styling and wig maintenance to live shooting, every nuance was fine-tuned on the fly. This Garden cheongsam styling harmonizes traditional oriental elegance with anime splendor. I hope these photos convey the joyful shoot and the rich visual texture crafted by professional lighting.
