From concept to reality, a lot of thought went into the design details for this elven-style Golden Lion Cosplay from Azur Lane. For these convention photos at the Firefly ACG Expo, I opted for a night shoot, combining the golden wig with ambient lighting to create a radiant, gilded nighttime atmosphere.
In terms of makeup and styling, the focus was placed on pairing the elf ears with the eye makeup. Purple-pink contact lenses paired with the wig instantly captured the character's essence. The lace choker and shoulder design are extremely delicate, with semi-sheer white fabric layered over a dark green train, creating an airy, flowing motion when walking. The happiest part of doing cosplay is bringing these 2D designs to life on oneself and truly feeling the character's presence.
We actually encountered quite a few challenges on the shoot day. The nighttime ambient lighting was rather complex; without professional LED fill-light equipment, capturing the fabric textures and highlight details on the garment would have been nearly impossible. The photographer deliberately chose a low-angle shot to both emphasize the length of the staff and showcase the leg lines and footwear. The combination of high-heeled sandals and pearl anklets was an accessory touch I prepared additionally, feeling it added a lively flair beyond the base design while revealing the ankle lines to make the posture look taller.
Because the fabric of this costume is relatively sheer, navigating the convention venue required careful attention to avoid exposure. The tulle and lace fabrics performed exceptionally well under lighting; especially when standing still, the naturally cascading skirt paired with the golden staff faithfully recreated Golden Lion's elegant yet mysterious aura. Among the convention photos returned from this shoot, my personal favorites are the one-knee kneeling shots, which seamlessly captured both the upper-body details of the outfit and the pearl accessories at my feet within the frame.
The atmosphere at the Firefly ACG Expo is always fantastic, allowing me to meet many fellow enthusiasts. Taking convention photos for one another and exchanging makeup tips at the convention is truly a major driving force for staying passionate in this hobby. While night shoots are physically demanding and require patient lighting adjustments to avoid harsh reflections or overly deep shadows, seeing the final texture and polish of this photo set made every bit of preparation completely worthwhile.
The contrasting white and dark green palette looks refreshingly clean, standing out strikingly against the dark night backdrop. The staff prop was also faithfully crafted; while it had some weight in hand, it made posing feel much more natural. Many friends might wonder if wearing elf ears is uncomfortable, but as long as they are properly positioned and secured with adhesive or bobby pins, they won't interfere with a full day of activities at all.
The scene setup was relatively simple, relying primarily on lighting to establish the ambiance. Frontal lights illuminated facial and body highlights, while side rim lights outlined silhouettes. Cosplay convention photos differ from studio shoots in that they leave much more room for spontaneous improvisation. Spotting a fluffy white rug on the ground at the time, I casually crouched down to strike a few poses; the result turned out surprisingly amazing, keeping the composition rich without feeling empty.
Lastly, on garment details: the green trim along the hemline boasts exquisite layering. Especially when walking or standing sideways, each layer of fabric reveals distinct gradients of light and shadow. The lace and pearl strands around the ankles are among the soul accents of the whole look; compared to plain solid-color sandals, these vintage, ornate foot ornaments better align with Golden Lion's character persona. I hope to have more opportunities to explore ornate cosplay styles like this and discover more aesthetic possibilities in the future.
