This duo photoshoot of Black Swan and Acheron from Honkai: Star Rail was completed in Tokyo in collaboration with my partners Rourourouzi and Yingxing, and photographer RainyDay. From the early preparations to the final output, the process of this shoot was incredibly thrilling.
The texture of the costumes was highly valued this time. The purple leather straps and metallic buckle details on Black Swan's outfit were extremely intricate, making the process of putting it on and taking it off more complicated than imagined, but it is precisely these details that restore that dark, elegant vibe. Acheron's blue and white coat has a structured fit with large sleeves, bringing out a flowing dynamic when making movements in the indoor scene, which is vital for expressing the character's temperament. To match these outfits, the wigs were also specially trimmed to create layers that fit our face shapes.
The shoot was set in an indoor space filled with European vintage elements. It featured deep-colored doors with wrought-iron carvings, a tall wooden corridor, and a classical dark green genuine leather sofa. The most atmospheric spot was the two-story library room; the giant grandfather clock and walls lined with dark bookshelves, combined with the dim, warm lighting, pushed the atmosphere to the max.
Light and shadow are the soul of this photoset. The photographer used side lighting to outline the characters' silhouettes while keeping the background shadows deep enough, allowing the characters to pop out from the complex scene. We experimented with various positionings and interactions across these scenes, hoping that the presented state wouldn't be simple staged posing, but more like a genuine dialogue between the two characters within this space.
We spent a lot of thought on the poses. For instance, for that posture on the sofa, we actually adjusted our center of gravity several times, needing to guarantee visual tension while maintaining the balance of the frame. Between the two of us, some shots featured close-up interactions, while others used one-in-front-of-the-other positioning, hoping to capture both the detached yet interwoven relationship between the characters.
In the early stages of the shoot, we clearly decided to ditch those highly saturated, fast-paced bright tones, choosing instead this darker and grainy approach, which aligns with the premium texture of Dark style photography. As it turns out, the dark background combined with the purple and blue of the costumes lit up by the lights truly gives the frame more storytelling depth.
My two partners were highly cooperative, understanding the composition needs and adjusting their postures in the shortest time. As cosplayers, being able to bring beloved characters into a real environment to record them is inherently a process full of ritual. This type of relatively sophisticated shoot does not pursue a mere stacking of numbers but values the sense of interaction and lighting logic behind each image.
While sorting through this photoset, I am quite satisfied with the control over the details. From the gloss of the hair strands to the texture of the cuffs, and the environmental color tones down to the warm and cold contrast of the costumes, everything successfully achieved our expected effects.
