[Ruan Mei cosplay] A cool-toned blue-themed outfit interpretation from Honkai: Star Rail

The blue-black gradient hair paired with ice-blue contact lenses—the moment I first saw the finished look photo, I felt the facial atmosphere fit my vision of the character perfectly. To restore the look, during makeup I deepened a drunken-like pink smudge at the outer corners of the eyes and cheeks, hoping to make my eyes look clearer and more spirited. The pearl necklace around the neck is paired with a gold bow set with a ruby; this detail is truly exquisite, elevating the retro and gorgeous feel of the entire outfit to another level.

Choosing this outfit for cosplay, I valued its unique cut and asymmetrical design the most. The deep blue tube top on the upper body uses textured fabric with gold 3D embroidery and piping, which keeps it from feeling overly dull while setting a good base color tone overall for this blue-themed outfit. The off-shoulder off-white shawl draped outside uses light, airy chiffon and jacquard pattern fabric with great drape, finished with wavy lace edges. Since the outfit itself has multiple layers, I paid close attention to posture management during the shoot.

To easily display the overall effect of the outfit later, I found a relatively clean white wall indoors as a background. In full-body shots, a major highlight of this outfit is the high-slit skirt design. Deep blue long streamers hang from the waist all the way down to the ankles, with white and gray geometric pattern prints along the edges; whether walking or standing, it indeed gives the whole look a strong sense of dynamic movement. To make the lower body lines look sleeker, I paired it with black pointed-toe high heels and wore leg straps with metallic decorations, which visually emphasizes the silhouette of the skirt's cut.

In the two close-up photos, you can actually see that accessories on this outfit are quite densely distributed. Apart from the pearl necklace around the neck, I also really like the black long gloves on my hands. The gloves are made of glossy faux leather material, and the silver decorative rings on the wrists are detachable—not only securing the long gloves but also making hand gestures less monotonous. However, after wearing them for a long time, the inside gets a bit stuffy, which is always a sweet burden cosplayers face during long shoots.

Regarding lighting, this shoot deliberately used a strong flash or post-processing highlight enhancement near the chest area. Although it gives a slight overexposure feel, it unexpectedly brought a transparent, ethereal, and dreamlike Chinese-style fantasy visual impact to the photo, counterbalancing the heavy velvet texture of the clothes and making the overall atmosphere softer. In those two selfie close-ups, I tried crossing my hands in front of me or raising my hand for a simple pose, focusing on details of my eyes, hair, and pearl neck ornament. Especially with the gradient hair color, given sufficient light, the black strands naturally transition into deep blue highlights, letting people clearly see hair details of the character.

Actually, every time I do cosplay, I care quite a bit about the wig's texture itself. This time I specifically picked a medium-length layered style with blue-gray gradient hair ends, while wearing a gold wooden-style geometric hair accessory on the right side. The hair accessory's details are well-crafted, restoring original settings while flattering the face shape and crown height nicely. Overall, this outfit restored the character's elegant and cool vibe quite well. Indoor natural light plus a bit of fill light equipment already brought out about 70-80% of the luster of the gold thread embroidery and pearl accessories on the clothes.

The entire process—from early test makeup prep to putting on layers of clothing, to adjusting standing positions and poses—was a truly immersive experience. The cinched waist design of the outfit sits just right, being neither too tight nor failing to outline the waistline, which, combined with large skin exposure and a high-slit skirt, achieves a balance between functionality and aesthetic appeal. This is also why I feel this shoot is worth sharing as a casual cosplay record. Although finding angles indoors by myself, holding a phone, or using a tripod timer keeps poses relatively fixed, trying different angles still revealed different aspects of beauty presented by this costume in various postures.

Because the outfit itself contains many elements—be it neck ornaments, gloves, leg straps, or waist flowers—it would be a real shame if these details weren't fully shown in the photos. I did my best to reflect all these elements across several full-body photos and close-ups. Especially the white flower ornament at the waist, combined with silver vine-patterned decorations, both embellished the simple white shawl and formed a contrast with the deep blue base skirt. This rich layering and meticulously detailed garment design is precisely what I find most worth savoring during this character interpretation process.
