[Youmu Konpaku Cosplay] The Sharp Silhouette of the Gardener in Touhou Project

Here to share a few behind-the-scenes insights alongside this newly shot set of Youmu Konpaku cosplay convention photos from Touhou Project.

The outfit design is actually rich in layers. The upper half is a classic white-and-green paneled Japanese-style top; the main body is made of clean, crisp white fabric, while the sleeves on both sides use a thinner mint-green sheer tulle that feels visually refreshing and drapes beautifully. The skirt structure on the lower half is more complex, adopting a multi-tiered ruffle design in dark forest green. A stiffer fabric was selected to hold its puffy volume, layered over a light-colored underskirt so that the skirt's rich depth flows naturally when walking or leaning over.

To echo the character setting, large flower decorations in various colors were added to the collar, cuffs, and waist belt. The combination of red, blue, and white flowers keeps the main green-and-white palette from looking overly cold. On the right side of the waist belt, alongside traditional Japanese knot cords and tassels, a white skull prop was added to create a strong visual echo with the skull element on the held katana's scabbard, adding a touch of warrior sternness to the adorable look.

For the wig, a silver-white short wig with straight bangs was chosen. The hair strands were styled to look light and fluffy, and the custom oversized black bow on top was secured firmly so it wouldn't shift while walking around or making large movements at the convention. The makeup placed focus on the eyes, paired with blue contact lenses to make the gaze look bright and clear. The base makeup was kept clean to soften facial shadows, bringing the overall vibe closer to the character's non-human origin.

As for details, the footwear and socks cannot be overlooked. The shoes selected were black-and-white checkered platform Japanese geta-style shoes, paired with white ruffled socks. Standing and shooting in this shoe style for extended periods on the hard convention floor requires balance techniques to avoid twisting an ankle, but in terms of composition, it lengthens leg lines and adds a visual anchor to the monochrome lower body—a crucial styling element.

Now, let's talk about the experience on set. Because this character demands a strong sense of action, communication with the photographer was extremely vital. Among the photos provided here, there are high-angle overhead shots, low-angle shots, and moments where a wide-angle lens was used to enhance dynamic tension. Convention venues feature complex lighting and crowded backgrounds; in photo 3, we specifically found an elevated angle looking down, using a sitting posture to fully display the leg and footwear details while blurring out the busy background to make the subject stand out cleanly. Photo 5 utilizes an exaggerated perspective combined with post-added flowing smoke effects to fully maximize the momentum of the sword slash.

Regarding the smoke special effects, it is worth clarifying that no physical smoke machine was used on-site—it was added entirely during post-processing. When compositing the smoke, careful attention was paid to its flow direction so it wouldn't obscure the eyes or key facial makeup, but rather swirl along the trajectory of the sword slash and movements. This maintained dynamic energy while preserving the clarity of facial features.

Shooting cosplay convention photos tests physical stamina and patience. Unlike studio shoots with precise lighting setups, convention photography requires quickly getting into character amid a noisy environment to capture the tension of a battle moment. The pose in photo 4 with both hands crossing katanas was attempted multiple times on-site—adjusting finger grip strength, angles, and the gaze reflected off the blade before capturing that frozen moment.

Lastly, while Touhou Project character designs are intricate, it is precisely the clash of elaborate petals, knot cords, Japanese patterns, and cold steel blades that gives the character such unique charm. Being able to capture such clear shots at a busy convention is thanks to the photographer's patient guidance and post-processing refinement, where harsh glare and distracting reflections were cleaned up beautifully, making all the effort feel worthwhile.
