[Youmu Konpaku Cosplay] Swinging Blades Under Night Cherry Blossoms: A Tribute to the Touhou Project Gardener

Standing amidst the night cherry blossoms and smoke in this Youmu Konpaku costume, my very first feeling was the wonderful bond brought by recreating the character in this anime cosplay work.

The most meticulous part of this \"Gardener of the Souls\" styling lies in the layers and details of the costume. The peacock-blue sleeveless pinafore dress paired with a white puff-sleeve lantern blouse, along with the black silk bow tie and belt at the collar, neatly cinched the entire waistline. The white crescent moon patterns adorning the skirt hem and lapels serve as the perfect touch, which, combined with the bottom layer of white ruffled lace edges, retains a signature touch of softness amidst the cool look. The classic combination of white over-the-knee socks and black platform loafers beautifully flatters the leg lines, making me look poised and efficient.

The props for this shoot are her dual swords. The black-and-white scabbards and hilts adorned with pink textures are highly recognizable. During the shoot, I experimented with many different wielding poses, such as holding the dual blades pointing diagonally, crossing a sword across my body, and a forward slash. The texture of the blades looked incredibly sharp under the cold light. Even knowing they were props, holding them combined with the smoke still invoked a battle-ready, awe-inspiring atmosphere as a dual-wielding girl.

The shooting location was set under cherry blossoms at night, with the fully blooming white and pink flower branches interwoven against the deep black background. To enhance the mystery and dramatic tension, we used a large amount of dry ice smoke on set. I absolutely love the silhouette shooting style in Image 2; the harsh backlighting combined with the cool-cyan ambient light perfectly froze the dynamic motion of swinging the blade in that split second, carrying a strong sense of storytelling.

And for full-body front-facing shots like Image 1 and Image 5, the main intent was to showcase the complete coordination of the outfit. Under the high-intensity cool-toned lighting of the night, the texture of the white hair, the blue uniform, and the white stockings created an incredibly pure color contrast. The photographer's control over the light was highly professional; the fine details of both the hair strands and the fabric texture were beautifully preserved without letting the heavy smoke wash out the character's features.

From prop preparation and costume adjustment to the actual on-site shoot, the entire team maintained a highly efficient and focused creative state. Since the Touhou Project series holds an esteemed position in anime cosplay culture, when portraying such characters, I hope the cut and fabric of the costume can stay as close to the original charm as possible. Although shooting cherry blossoms at night is physically demanding—requiring constant adjustments of my standing position among the cherry blossom branches to let the background flowers form a natural frame—seeing the final photos capture that cool, melancholy, yet resolute temperament made me feel all the hard work was completely worth it.
