When it comes to summer aquatic-themed shoots, during early planning we first finalized this visual concept pairing mint green with gradient pink-blonde hair. This cool pastel palette resonates beautifully with the glistening pool water. For the character of Marin Kitagawa in My Dress-Up Darling, her styling possesses distinct personal flair; slipping into this Swimsuit, I needed to convey that vibrant, energetic presence as much as possible through movement and expression.
Looking at hair and makeup details, the wig used this time was a light beige-blonde with softly blended gradient pink tips. To achieve high character fidelity, we paid special attention to the curvature of the bangs and side braids along the cheeks. In high-humidity, misty poolside environments, wigs can easily clump or lose volume. Therefore, before shooting, I reinforced the roots with a bit of styling spray and secured hair strands behind the ears with clips so that the wig maintained its layered structure no matter how I turned my head. For makeup, the focus was magnifying light and shadow around the eyes. A luminous base foundation paired with fine-shimmer eyeshadow created a translucent glow under outdoor sunlight and water reflections, acting like a natural reflector. I chose quick-drying, waterproof eyeliner to prevent smudging from splashing water, while applying a glossy, hydrating lip shade to make the entire makeup look breezy and seamless. Contouring and highlighting were kept restrained to project a natural, healthy glow under bright sunlight.
During shooting, standing on submerged steps required much more core stability than posing on flat ground. Wet step surfaces can be slick, and combined with water buoyancy, it's easy to lose balance slightly. Thus, when posing, I engaged my core gently to ensure expansive, graceful posture. For instance, the pose where I sit at the water's edge, extend one leg forward, and reach up to adjust my braid requires relaxed shoulders and a straight back to properly utilize water refraction to visually elongate the lower body. Water refraction causes a discrepancy between the visual and actual placement of legs submerged in water, so the photographer paid close attention to water ripples in relation to my body position to capture harmonious proportions. For shots flashing double peace signs, wrist flexibility was key to making the gestures appear natural and effortless rather than stiff.
Regarding the outfit coordination, the mint-green halter bikini was exceptionally eye-catching in this setting, with the delicate yellow bow on the chest serving as an exquisite visual accent. The semi-translucent white mesh and pearl bead ornamentation on the lower piece brought out a romantic, adorable charm. Furthermore, the translucent fabric took on a skin-clinging wet texture upon entering the water, which, combined with shifting light across moving ripples, added dynamic vitality to the photos. Expansive light bokeh on the water's surface, along with blurred amusement rides and greenery in the background, established wonderful spatial depth. We opted for candid snaps under natural light without heavy lighting equipment, relying on the water's diffuse reflection to soften facial lighting transitions and avoid harsh shadows under the midday sun.
Additionally, for characters with light hair colors, shooting under harsh outdoor sunlight can easily make wigs appear frizzy. We kept a small water spray bottle and a damp comb on set to tidy up between pose transitions, smoothing away stray water droplets to prevent them from creating harsh glare under sunlight. The overall pacing was kept relaxed; although it was a Swimsuit shoot, the primary goal was conveying the character's open, confident grace rather than obsessing over rigid angles, as this carefree ease fits the mood of a summer outing much better.
Overall, this Water park cosplay shoot was a thoroughly enjoyable endeavor. Within the environmental constraints, we combined the character's distinct traits to capture these frames. Blending the character's summer vacation vibe with spontaneous, natural gestures represents my photographic documentation of this Marin Kitagawa cosplay Swimsuit look for this Anime cosplay project.
