[Hu Tao Cosplay] Genshin Impact's Lantern Rite: Joy and Prosperity Accompany Little Nian

Releasing this set of Lantern Rite-themed Hu Tao cosplay photos on Little Nian was a deliberate choice, as the Lunar Little Nian inherently symbolizes ringing out the old and welcoming the new. The shooting location for this set was intentionally selected to be a real-world venue brimming with a traditional Chinese temple fair atmosphere. Elements like red silk fabrics, woven bamboo lanterns, and background Spring Festival couplets set a warm and festive tonal foundation for the entire composition.

As for props, I specifically prepared a substantial replica gold ingot and candied hawthorns encrusted with white sesame seeds. The metallic reflection of the gold ingot posed a real challenge for on-site lighting layout; we placed a warm rim light from the rear-side angle to highlight the high-gloss edges of the ingot, granting it a richer, more tactile texture in the frame. The candied hawthorns serve not only as a classic traditional snack but also as a hand-held prop whose bright red hue creates a subtle color harmony with the hair dye highlights. During poses—whether cheekily biting into the candied hawthorns or endearingly holding the gold ingot in one hand—I strived to replicate Hu Tao's vibrant, lively character archetype.

Once Little Nian passes, the Spring Festival officially kicks off, making this Traditional Chinese style cosplay look for Hu Tao perfectly aligned with the celebratory mood of Lantern Rite—a festival where virtual and real-world traditions blend. Regarding lighting execution, I opted for a hybrid light source weaving red and warm yellow light; this setup highlighted close-ups of the red contact lenses while imbuing the wooden architectural background with an antique, rustic texture.

For makeup, to harmonize with the background's warm lighting, I avoided cool tones around the eyes and instead opted for widespread warm orange smudging, paired with crisp black elongated eyeliner and false eyelashes to visually enlarge eye proportions. Red contact lenses formed the visual focal point of the makeup, instantly illuminating her gaze and infusing the character with expressive energy. For the wig, I selected dark chestnut as the base shade, integrating dark red highlights along the tips and inner layers. This color scheme avoids blending monotonously with the black hat and black frog-button jacket while maintaining a subtle color logic with the red collar.

I should especially highlight the eye makeup details: to pursue a translucent 2D aesthetic, orange-pink glitter was added to brighten the eyeshadow. Thus, even when looking up at the camera during selfie angles, shimmering highlights dance on the eyelids, rendering her gaze fluid and lively. Paired with the white emblem on the hat brim and the naturally draping bangs of the wig, the overall facial contours emerge crisp and clear.

The outfit serves as the soul of this look. The black Chinese frog-button jacket isn't a plain dark fabric; under light refraction, it exhibits a subtle matte velvety sheen. The golden four-petal floral emblem on the chest adds another nuanced detail—its metallic material glimmers dynamically under reflecting studio and ambient lights. The inner red mandarin collar significantly brightens the complexion, providing a vivid visual pop amidst the dark-toned ensemble.

During shooting, I experimented with various compositions—such as using the slight distortion of a close-up wide-angle lens to create a cute selfie perspective, or eye-level shots showcasing costume structure. Leaning slightly forward while holding the gold ingot, or playfully opening my mouth with the candied hawthorns, were choices aimed at portraying a character balancing solemnity with mischievous eccentric charm.

Let me also share a few fun behind-the-scenes anecdotes from the shoot. To make the candied hawthorns look crystalline and glistening, we sprayed a fine mist of purified water over the surface, rendering it exceptionally glossy on camera. However, this made it slick to hold—it nearly slipped out of my hand several times, which had me bursting into laughter from the close calls. Furthermore, the replica gold ingot was genuinely heavy, testing my arm strength during extended holding poses. Yet that heavy prop feel conversely grounded my presence, instilling a steadier poise in front of the lens.

In my view, combining Hanfu, traditional Chinese fashion, and cosplay creates a remarkably natural harmony under festive themes. Traditional elements not only enrich character interpretation with detailed visual flair, but also build a bridge connecting the virtual world with reality. On this special occasion of Little Nian, I hope my styling and photography bring you pure visual enjoyment and holiday joy.

Little Nian is also when the atmosphere of Lantern Rite reaches its height. Although photos merely freeze moments in time, standing amid glowing red lanterns and Spring Festival couplets truly allowed me to soak in the beauty of traditional holidays. Every pre-shoot styling routine and wig layering adjustment feels like a dialogue with the character. Being able to convey these festive blessings through imagery is one of the distinct joys of being a cosplayer.
