[Ulrich von Hutten cosplay] Iron Blood Vanguard of Azur Lane: Convention Photos Log of a Black and Red Patent Leather Outfit

The vanguard of Iron Blood never dims because of the dark night. This time I cosplayed Ulrich von Hutten from Azur Lane. Previously, I was thinking about how to recreate this black and red outfit, especially the large surface area of glossy patent leather. To shoot these convention photos, I specifically chose to enter the hall during peak foot traffic, aiming to showcase the character's presence right under the spotlights.

Speaking of the outfit this time, the texture of the patent leather is truly eye-catching, though it comes with a few challenges. It reflects light wherever you walk, and this material isn't breathable at all; walking and stopping around the convention hall, you quickly start feeling a bit stuffy underneath. Fortunately, the overall tailoring design is sharp and clean without superfluous decorations. The top is a short jacket with an inner tube top, and the bare waist area provides just the right visual breathing room for the silhouette. The bottom consists of matching patent leather shorts paired with high-heeled ankle boots, elongating the overall body proportions significantly.

Regarding styling, what took the most effort was actually the blue gradient tint at the tips of the hair. Although it's a short hairstyle, the contrast in cut and color gives the character extremely high recognizability. To match the makeup and styling, bright yellow contacts were chosen, which not only brighten the eyes but also add a touch of sharpness belonging to the Iron Blood faction. Then there are the two small red horns on the head; though tiny, they serve as the perfect finishing touch to the entire look.

The photography collaboration went very smoothly. The photographer found a spot in the venue with relatively even lighting, which kept the patent leather reflection from looking overly harsh or cluttered. The metal pole in hand was actually not light; holding it for a while made my palms sweat, requiring me to switch hands every so often. Luckily, such props carry a strong presence in the final photos. As an iconic element, adding the flag prop gave my poses a much stronger visual extension.

To make the photos more vivid, besides standing and posing, I also tried some angles with dynamic depth during the shoot, such as turning slightly sideways or lowering a shoulder, leveraging the outfit's contour to enhance the character's three-dimensionality. Many times, cosplay isn't just about slipping into a costume; more importantly, it's about capturing the soul of the character prototype through eyes and posture. Ulrich von Hutten possesses a cool and handsome edge, so when posing, I also tried to keep my center of gravity low, making my state look both powerful and composed.

Taking care of patent leather material is quite a test; it leaves fingerprints or creases if you're not careful, so extra caution was needed between shooting takes. But then again, being able to capture depth and texture in this glossy material in front of the lens was both a challenge and a joy. Many people around were curious about what it feels like to walk around a convention for half a day in this material; it would be a lie to say it isn't stuffy, but the moment you stand before the lens, you almost forget the ambient temperature for a brief moment. In fact, this outfit has a strong stage presence; both the luster and the tailoring are perfectly suited for unleashing aura in front of the camera.

In the end, every attempt at a different character is a self-assessment of one's understanding and character accuracy. For this Ulrich von Hutten attempt, I am personally satisfied with the styling hardware. The accent accessories, the fit of the clothes, combined with heterochromatic eyes and gradient hair, brought out the Iron Blood atmosphere naturally. Walking through the venue got quite a lot of head-turns. Although my body felt slightly exhausted, everyone's enthusiasm for this passion always makes you forget the hard work. Finally, thanks to my photographer friend for capturing clean shots amidst the crowd, without letting the complex background compromise the main subject's expressive power in this Anime-style photography session.
