[Violet Evergarden cosplay] A Long-Delayed Outdoor Portrait Shoot from Violet Evergarden

This set of Violet Evergarden photos has been rescheduled since last year, continually delayed by various minor matters. When the final date was locked in, the shoot was still extraordinarily rushed. From scouting the location to the formal shoot, preparation time was extremely limited, but fortunately, we finally managed to produce the full shoot.

In terms of costume, this deep blue retro uniform coat is quite heavy. It features gold trim and metal buttons, leather strap detailing across the chest, a ruffled white cravat at the collar, and a green brooch pinned in the center. To faithfully recreate the character's hairstyle, I wore a blonde wig braided in the back, tied with a vibrant red ribbon cascading over my shoulders. For the lower half, a white pleated maxi skirt with a voluminous, layered silhouette requires extra care while walking to avoid stepping on the hem. On my feet were burgundy lace-up tall leather boots; the stiff leather took some getting used to. The dark brown short leather gloves fitted snugly, making it easy to handle props.

For props, we prepared a black vintage suitcase and numerous white envelopes, each meticulously finished with a red wax seal for rich detail. To enhance the scene's fantastical ambiance, a floating-envelope effect was added in post-production.

The outdoor portrait was set in a park featuring a lake, open lawns, classic architecture, and a fountain. Sunlight was exceptionally harsh that day, proving to be a double-edged sword. On the upside, it offered rich layers of light and shadow, casting striking textures across the white skirt and tree trunks through the foliage. On the downside, the harsh direct light frequently forced us to adjust angles to evade glare or seek shaded spots. Many poses were struck hastily in a race against shifting light.

For poses, I drew heavily from the character’s quiet, slightly melancholy, yet resolute demeanor—leaning against a tree trunk, lifting a gloved hand toward the sunlight, or tidying my hair with a lowered gaze. While holding envelopes, I kept my gestures natural, imagining reading or preparing to send them. The black suitcase served as an ideal interactive element; resting beside me, it reinforced her professional role while grounding the composition.

Overall, the shoot felt hurried, and several planned shots were dropped due to time constraints. The white pleated skirt wrinkled easily when sitting on the ground, requiring constant adjusting, and wearing heavy uniform layers with tall boots outdoors was physically demanding. Yet, reviewing the photos and watching that red ribbon flutter in the sunlight made the exhaustion and haste instantly fade away.

Post-processing prioritized the natural outdoor light, avoiding heavy color grading to keep the tones clear and luminous. The floating envelopes were arranged with restraint to avoid clutter. After postponing since last year, I'm glad to finally give this character the dedication she deserves.
