Digging out this Misaki Mei cosplay shoot from eight years ago reminded me how incredible Escape room photography truly is! Looking through these photos instantly brought back the chilling, oppressive, and deeply immersive atmosphere from that day.
First, let's talk about the styling. Misaki Mei's signature features are her white eyepatch and jet-black shoulder-length bob. Back then, styling this wig took hours of careful trimming to preserve that subtle, slightly flared weight at the ends. The outfit was a quintessential Japanese school uniform: a crisp white shirt, red ribbon tie, black double-breasted vest, and dark pleated skirt, coordinated with over-the-knee Black stockings and black leather loafers. The styling was minimalist with zero convoluted props, yet this simple school uniform paired with an eyepatch carried an intense visual contrast within this specific Horror atmosphere.
Opting for an escape room for this shoot was hands-down the best decision I ever made. The abandoned hospital set seemed custom-tailored for this character from Another. The white-and-blue peeling walls, cold fluorescent strip lights humming down the corridor, rows of plastic blue waiting chairs, and the hospital bed right in the center draped in bloodstained sheets beneath a tarnished surgical lamp all heightened the dread. Dark red bloody handprints and smears lined the walls, while doorframes and glass partitions in the background were splattered with dramatic bloodstains.
Shooting in such a dim, cramped escape room posed a serious challenge for lighting and composition. The photographer utilized the room's harsh overhead light fixtures to cast sharp, unforgiving shadows across my face, which, combined with my deadpan expression, perfectly accentuated a sickly, detached, and uncanny aura. In the first shot, I stood in the middle of the room lightly touching my eyepatch, staring straight into the lens with the disheveled hospital bed behind me. The second shot shows me seated on the hallway chairs—personally my favorite frame—with legs crossed and shoulders slightly hunched; the Black stockings elongated my leg line within the composition, and alongside the corridor's receding depth, the tension was palpable. In the third shot, standing before a narrow, blood-smeared glass door with strewn wigs and bloodied bandages scattered across the floor, the Horror atmosphere was dialed to the absolute max.
Because the escape room was claustrophobic with stale air, pacing and repositioning across the freezing floor in Black stockings and stiff loafers was quite grueling. Poses could never look too lively; I had to constantly maintain a sense of listless lethargy and uncanny rigidity. To embody the character, I refrained from smiling throughout, keeping my gaze relaxed yet intensely focused. Even periodically adjusting the eyepatch was calculated to convey a subtle, lingering discomfort on camera.
Regarding post-processing, we avoided flashy filters, primarily crushing environmental exposure while boosting the contrast and saturation of the reds to make the bloodstains look visceral and piercing. Skin tones were graded to a ghostly cool white, and fine grain was added to shadows to impart the gritty film texture of vintage surveillance footage or a classic horror movie. It was an exhausting Misaki Mei cosplay shoot, but the finished results brought immense satisfaction, flawlessly resurrecting the chilling, suspenseful Horror atmosphere of Another that I had envisioned.
