[Phrolova cosplay] Wuthering Waves Classic Red & Black Styling Interpretation

The details on this red and black outfit for Phrolova are truly overwhelming. From receiving the costume to the actual photoshoot, I made numerous adjustments back and forth. Let's start with wig styling: getting the long mint-green hair to look smooth and dimensional took quite some time. In particular, that cool-toned green shade tends to look dull under indoor lighting, so we constantly repositioned the studio lights throughout the shoot. The blunt bangs and face-framing sidelocks contoured my face nicely, while the thick, long braid at the back constantly required careful placement—either draped forward or tucked behind—to avoid tangling with the intricate layers of the costume.

For makeup, to match the character's heterochromia and overall sense of mystery, I chose vivid light-blue contact lenses, defined the eye contours and lashes, and applied a classic true-red lipstick to echo the outfit. The upper bodice features an asymmetrical off-the-shoulder cut; the fluffy red feather cluster on the chest is an eye-catching statement, though it easily snags on lace and sleeves, demanding gentle handling each time it was adjusted. The red-and-white ribbons and detached sleeves on the arms were secured separately, requiring layer-by-layer wrapping without restricting arm mobility, especially since I needed to hold and pose with a violin.

The lower ensemble is full of dynamic layers. An asymmetrical long overskirt with white totemic motifs wraps around a black mini skirt, complemented by an intricate web of belts and straps—complete with leather buckles, metal O-rings, and small pouch-like accents—giving it exceptional drape. My favorite part is the pair of Black stockings featuring red vertical stripes that visually elongate the legs. With the red garters around the thighs and red high heels, the overall completeness of the look peaked. However, the ankle wrap straps on the heels were quite a workout, requiring multiple loops and precise fastening, which meant readjusting them after just a few steps.

The set design was another major highlight: a vintage indoor aesthetic complete with a black grand piano, an antique gramophone, black iron birdcages, and lush clusters of red flowers. The backdrop consisted of cascading red drapery illuminated by a crystal chandelier overhead, creating an immersive stage-like atmosphere when the lights hit. Whether sitting on the piano bench or standing beside the keys playing the violin, I had to pay close attention to posture and gaze. The flared train is voluminous, so sitting down meant fanning out the skirt smoothly to avoid bulkiness while keeping my spine perfectly upright.

During the shots with the violin, there was of course no real sound, so I had to sync my movements precisely with the camera—from the bow grip to the torso angle—replicating an authentic performance stance while ensuring my expression didn't turn stiff. The sharp color clash of red, black, white, and mint green was visually striking, helping me slip into character much faster. The entire shoot went smoothly, aiming to convey that poised yet dangerous allure, and I hope everyone can appreciate the unique charm of this look.
