When the theme for this winter port pop-up shoot was finalized, my partner and I discussed how to use an authentic atmospheric feel to interpret this offline on-location shoot for Azur Lane. The location was set in an exceptionally cozy café, where red brick walls and natural wood shelving formed the dominant palette—matching our vision of a "winter port haven" perfectly. I was responsible for Kashino Cosplay, while my partner cosplayed Shimanto (Shimanto cosplay).
Since both of us were doing a Maid outfit cosplay, we put a lot of thought into the styling and outfit details (Stocking outfit). Kashino's look is built around classic black, white, and red tones; the ruffled maid bonnet paired with fluffy animal ears instantly captures the character's signature traits. The black neck pendant and bow tie seem simple, but keeping them flat and conforming to the neckline during wear was essential to avoid warping at higher camera angles. The most eye-catching element was the black over-the-knee stockings paired with the flared skirt and that uniquely stylish plush tail, which visually elongated body proportions significantly. When sitting down, the skirt hem rested just above the stockings, effortlessly conveying a gentle, cozy ambiance through the lens.
My partner's Shimanto cosplay presented a completely different visual aesthetic. Long straight silver-white hair paired with reindeer-like antlers gave off the immediate impression of a winter forest spirit. The cuffs of Shimanto's outfit featured distinct white ruffled patchwork, creating a wonderful dialogue with the monochrome base palette while exuding a crisp, clean, and refined elegance. Standing together, our colors offered depth while unifying under the shared Maid outfit cosplay theme—making for a harmonious duo pairing.
The temperature on the shoot day was chilly, but the dim, soft warm lighting inside the café perfectly neutralized the cold outside. We initially planned relatively simple props; aside from the café's existing tableware, we specially brought a black chalkboard sign. We hand-drew a little animal holding a coffee cup, intentionally leaving a blank space for handwritten slogans. Complemented by coffee bags and clear glass mugs arranged across the wooden tabletop, the overall setup felt delightfully casual and full of daily life.
In terms of makeup, I opted for cool-toned eye makeup paired with soft lip color to balance the visual weight of black hair and a black dress. Meanwhile, to complement her silver-white hair, my partner wore a translucent, dewy base makeup that highlighted the lively sparkle in her eyes. During shooting, we selected stable framing angles—from medium shots seated by the bar counter to half-body close-ups using the red wall as a backdrop—striving to maximize every detail from costume textures to character expressions.
The true significance of this pop-up on-location shoot lay not just in taking pretty pictures, but in the immersive experience itself. Sitting alongside the characters by the counter of a winter port pop-up with a warm drink in hand felt like bridging 2D fantasy and reality. We captured so many satisfying frames throughout the shoot, and our chemistry kept things moving smoothly without delays from intricate costumes. After wrapping up, my Stocking outfit and skirt hem had picked up some creases from sitting, which I'll carefully steam and care for at home—after all, every outfit is infused with our deep love for the characters and Azur Lane.
