[Jingliu cosplay] Sword Champion of Honkai: Star Rail: Recreating the Nuance of Crimson Eyes

A tremendous amount of thought went into the styling and shooting of this Jingliu cosplay. To faithfully capture those iconic, instantly recognizable crimson pupils from Honkai: Star Rail, I tested multiple pairs of colored contacts, ultimately choosing a design with a darkened limbal ring; this kept the eyes looking luminous before the lens while naturally channeling a chilling, lethal edge. Instead of standard soft pinkish tones, the eye makeup deepened the crimson blending along the outer corners, which, paired with an upward-winged eyeliner, achieved that piercing, razor-sharp gaze looking straight into the camera.

The wig stood as one of the greatest hurdles this time. Silver-white hair can easily look unnatural on camera, and constructing the high braided updo alongside cascading blue-gradient hair ends proved demanding. The crescent moon hairpin at the crown required inner support from U-pins and wire mesh to anchor securely without exposing the wig cap underneath. Grooming the locks demanded heavy use of styling pomade and holding spray, and this cool-toned palette harmonized seamlessly with her lore.

For the costume, we selected a pearlescent glossy blue fabric, which proved notoriously challenging to photograph—the slightest lighting error could trigger blown-out reflections. The black leather collar across the chest, metallic ring chains, teardrop pendants, and golden auspicious cloud embroideries were intensely detailed, requiring a strict dressing sequence; only when the red front straps and back harnesses were firmly secured did the entire silhouette hold a crisp, upright posture. The fabric snagged easily on the sword hilt behind my back, demanding extreme caution with posture and movement during takes.

We staged the shoot in a Chinese traditional style study set with carved wooden window lattices, bookshelves, and plum blossom branches. This environment resonated with the character's cool, tranquil temperament, and natural daylight filtering through the windows carved out exquisite rim contours. In Photo 3, leaning slightly forward to gaze down into the camera maximized the luminous crimson gleam of the pupils; paired with level, squared shoulders, it amplified the commanding tension of the character, which is why I chose it as the cover. The greatest takeaway from this anime cosplay set was that while perfecting garment texture is essential, capturing that focused gaze and tightly coiled composure is what truly breathes soul into the character.
